Ever seen "Irreversible"? It's a french movie starring Vincent Cassell. Absolutely not for the faint hearted and a difficult watch but I enjoyed it. Enjoyed is probably the wrong word, worth watching anyway.

Be warned, there is a very "real looking" rape scene in it!

Anything from Pedro Almodovar (Spanish director) should do the trick. Great director with great stories. Talk to her is a personal favourite of mine but he has so many great films. Watch them all!

Not forgetting the fact it's about 7 minutes long.

Try some or all of the following.. mostly horror but it's my bag:
    • Let The Right One In
    • Pan's Labyrinth
    • Rec
    • Rec 2
    • Martyrs
    • Inside (L'Interieur)
    • A Prophet
    • The Orphanage
    • Ils (Them)
All I can think of right now..

I thought that 'The Girl with the dragon tattoo' was really good. Definitely worth a look if you're into crime-thrillers.

    Basquille's list + the following:

    Delicatessen (French)
    De grønne slagtere (Danish)
    Ondskan (Swedish)
A Tale of Two Sisters (South Korean)
Oldboy/Sympathy For Lady Vengeance/Mr. Vengeance (South Korean)
The Good the Bad and the Weird (South Korean)
    La Haine (French)
    City of God (Brazilian Portuguese)
    Das Experiment (German)
    Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex (German)
Død Snø (Norwegian and good for a laugh if you like nazi zombies)
Saam gaang yi (aka Three Extremes, South Korean, Chinese, Japanese)

EDIT: Oh, for some reason I thought this was for foreign films in general, not just European. :o My bad.

Tell No One is a superb French triller which was made in an fairly American style, only better. It's actually based on an American novel, but they changed the location to France. It contains one of the best foot-chases of any film in recent years imo. There's supposedly a Hollywood remake in development.

Basq already mentioned Amélie, but I would also recommend A Very Long Engagement by the same director. It has one of the most perfectly bittersweet endings I've ever seen in a film. The kind of thing Hollywood seems totally unable to do anymore.

I'm surprised no one has mention The Lives of Others yet. Probably one of my favourite films of the last 10 years. It's a slow moving film, but much like the main character, you find yourself getting increasingly absorbed. The final act is very moving and brilliantly executed. I believe Hollywood have plans to remake this as well.

And with that I'm afraid I'm going to have to lock this as it is a list thread. The OP should have enough to go on though.
