Bring me into this century by helping replace my dvd/vcr.

Ok - I need to replace my dvd/vcr... Not sure what I should be buying - blu ray, media player/ media player with storage, dvd recorder - been reading online but non the wiser. Have Sky+ and a shiney new Sony BX4/40 tv - thanks to Bargain Alerts:D.
Would like to get all my old dvds onto some digital format and figure out some way of downloading movies etc would also need to be able to record tv - can anyone advise or point me in the direction of a simple guide to read?? Im a bit lost as reading about all these different formats mkv etc - way behind the times but anxious to catch up!

I asked the seller a question on Timeshift and got back a positive, if a little confusing, yes.

The guys over on AVS Forums were looking at this last year - not a huge amount of info but have a look here for some screen shots and limited discussion :

It indicates there's a Timeshift funciton (look for "Setting timeshift buffer" in the manual). Looks like it supports recording from both a DVB-T source and through the composite input so you'd be able to "save" existing recordings from your Sky+ box by playing them and recording on the SumVision. A bit long winded, and I presume that the picture quality over composite is limited (don't have much experience in this regard, but I'm guessing a Sky+ HD to composite out is not going to look pretty) but beats pulling the hard drive out.
