State Papers 1980

The publication of the state papers under the 30 year rule always make interesting reading, but 1980 was a particularly eventful year. Dominated by the newly elected Haughey and Thatcher on these islands.

It was also the year of Haughey's infamous "We are living way beyond our means" speech. There was a palpable fear during the year that the IMF may be called in to run our finances!

And as the article below shows, there was anger and concern regarding the failure of some developers to complete the construction of housing estates.

The British Embassy profile of Haughey couldn't have been more accurate!

    The more things change huh?

I have a feeling (my total and unreserved cynicism) that the release of these papers are a way for FF to rub it in peoples faces and say "we can do what we like, we always have done what suited us - party before country etc".
Of course they were aware of rogue developers, they are symbiotic parasites after all.
