Flight Compensation - KLM

A friend of mine recently spent a nightmare time in Heathrow, like many others of course. She was supposed to get a flight with KLM from London To Dublin on Friday 17th, but her flight got cancelled and KLM put her up in a hotel in London. The following day her flight got cancelled and KLM refused to help her anymore after this. She ended up spending until the following Wednesday, the 22nd, with her flights being cancelled. She also ended up sharing a split room with a family in a cheap hotel in London and paying for it herself, along with underground tickets and food etc.

She finally ended up getting a flight to Dublin with a separate airline, which KLM passed her onto.

I dont have any experience with claiming compensation from airlines or looking for refunds. So im wondering if someone with experience or knowledge of the best procedure to do this could give some tips and advice?

    Thanks in advance

You will need to check this with consumers assoc as there are different rules depending on whether your friend's flight origiunated in London or if it was the second leg of a trip etc etc.

If she booked the london to dublin part herself away from any othe rbooking and the london to dublin oart was the outbound part, then once notice of cancellation is given the airline does not need to provide further accomodation / food etc.

If it was a second leg of a journey, then it s with the original airline that your contract is with (possibly klm too) and then they do have to provide accomodation / compensation.

    Thanks for that.

She originally flew from Brazil with a Brazilian airline called TAM, they are partnered with KLM in Holland. After her flights kept getting cancelled KLM decided to put her on a flight with one of their partners, BMI, to get her to Dublin on the Wednesday. She at no time made a separate booking herself, everything was done through KLM.

I would presume KLM is the one to try and retrieve costs she payed out/compensation from?

BMI are not partnered with KLM/Air France.

Who was she originally to fly with on the LHR-DUB section? KLM don't fly LHR-DUB.

If her initial flight booking was booked through TAM they are responsible, if it was booked through KLM then they should compensate.

Her e-ticket number and receipt will give her that info
