    Hi there...
trying to sort my sister-in-laws laptop for her but not having much joy.

basically, windows wont start up at all. The acer logo appears on screen with the 'hit f2 to enter set up' message but then goes blank with just the cursor flashing at the top left hand corner of the screen.

Ive taken out the HDD and connected it to my own pc with a usb adapter and can access the files on it. Im assuming from this that the HDD is ok.

Ive scanned the HDD using malware bytes anti-malware and it DID find 2 trojans. I had hoped this would be the problem but it still wouldnt boot.

Its got 4Gb of RAM ....I swapped around the ram sticks and tried booting without either stick but still no joy.

So at this stage, herres where im at:

Im fairly sure its not virus related, the HDD is ok and the RAM is ok.
Its an acer machine running WIn Vista, 4Gb Ram and 500 Gb HDD.
Id really appreciate any help here before i turn it into a shop.

    thanks,
    ken.

Just because you are able to access the harddrive in another computer, doesn't mean that there isn't still a fault with the drive. It can take only one bad sector on a drive to cause it to fail.

I would advise while you have the disk removed, backup (or atleast attempt) any data onto your PC via. USB. Once you have done so replace the harddisk back into the machine and go into BIOS and reset its settings back to its default settings. Make sure there is no USB memory sticks inserted and no CD's in the CD-ROM drive. Finally, check there is no damage to any USB ports on the front/Rear of the computer. (It kind of sounds like its trying to boot from something else, other than the Hard Drive)

If it still fails, try do a full system recovery(This will erase all data on unit, make sure you have backed up). To do a system recovery, at the Acer boot-up screen hold down (ALT GR) + (F10) try pressing them together a few times. If it doesn't load into a recovery program, try (ALT GR) + (F8) or (ALT GR) + (F11). These are all different combinations to access the system recovery options. If you manage to get into the recovery, follow the on screen instructions to do a Full System Recovery.

I can access the bios and boot sequence is reset to default.

I cannot however, enter the erecovery system. from reading on the acer site, ive tried pressing alt while tapping f10. im guessing there is a problem with this partition on the drive.

maybe im gonna have to re-install from a cd?
