I use CCI standard velocity, before that I used Winchester T22's. Winchester has gone to hell though so i'll be sticking with CCI.

    +1 cci stingers

I used cci min mag aswell they were not that bad but I'm missing stingers big time you'd kill at 100 easy I dropped a fox one nite with them at about 80 90 yards I just don't know if the others could do it as easy

when you say best round, I think there isn't one.
what will shoot well in my gun might be useless in yours
I can get groups of around 1 1/2" at 100yards with my .22
but when I tried to zero a friends rifle the groups were about 4" using the same bullets and no matter what I done I couldn't get any better
his gun just dosn't like winchester subsonic or the gun is useless

I find the remmy yellow jackets are very powerful but not accurate at all.
The best hunting round I've used lately was winchester super x power point. Very accurate.
I've never tried cci stingers but found the cci mini mags (target) go well but the varmint ones are all over the place.

Are you looking for .22 ammo for foxes are and all rounder?

Ye good point I wAs out today I was getting groups around the same but always pulled one shot doe now that's grouping with prob 5 rounds it's prob me at the same time what happened with your mates gun could you correct the prob with dif ammo or what happened. I know what your sayin about the gun but I used eley before and i though they weren't very accurate round at all. But would I be right in saying the subs are might be a bit harder to group because there not as fast

just got the friends gun as good as I could with the winchesters and told him we would have to get different bullets to get better goups
the remington high velocity were grouping around 2" in my gun and 4" in his
but when I tried the winchester subsconic, I had the silcencer on my gun maybe that made the differance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,248 ✭✭✭One shot on kill

It pos to I zeros at 100 on day with cci and then put on the silencer and used the subs at it hit the ground at about 60 yards I nearly got sick now I brought onto the target but it turned me off them might give it another go with a better round silencer is good when your out were you should be

oneshotonekill i shot my first fox with a cci stinger too at about 70 odd yards and i was surprised how easy he dropped. i use 40 grain winchester subs too and i have to admit i think they suit my cz very well and plus i can use the silencer.

Only ever use eley sub sonics in my ruger 10/22. No crow or rabbit safe to 100 yards

In my little cz, i found eley sub sonics good, but she preferd sk and also rw50s

I could never get the HV rounds to group well so I will never use them to shoot animals as I can't be sure of a humain kill.

The best ammo I found for use in my CZ style was either the Laupa or Eley subs and can get consistent 1/2" groups at 50m. I also made up a drop chart that allows me to shoot, with accuracy, out to 130 yards.

When I first got the CZ style I did a small test with the HV ammo. The aim point was the 1/2" black ring. And the zero was the same but using the subs. It shows the extra range you may get with the HV ammo and also the bigger grouping.

Hyper velocity have always suited my brno better. I used to use stingers but now theyre gone I use yellow jackets. Ive tried eley and lapua subs i think the eleys were consistent but only got maybe one inch at 50 yrds and the lapua arent great in it either.

In the picture (if it comes up ) There are two three shot groups from 70 yards using yellow jackets. The holes nearest to the "X" are the first of the three shots. My theory is that the barrel heats after the first shot and from there they get less accurate. Also I suppose a slower twist rate is less common and most 22's nowdays have faster twist rate for 40grain subs.

I mostly hear people saying subs are more accurate and i thought id put my vote in for hypervelocity! :pac:

I think most of the factory built non target rifles come in 1-16 twist as standard.

I now have the CZ varmint 22lr, swopped over from the CZ style, and I still have to get it to the range to see how it shoots and what ammo it likes to use. I have seen it shoot the HV very well out to 100m.

But that won't be till after the deer stalking season has ended.

You should try out "Velocitors" they pack 33% extra punch on standard .22LR rounds - they're made by CCI also.
They shoot well from my Anschutz .22LR

Yeah id like to try the velocitors once they start coming to ireland again.

Is there a way to find out twist rate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 119 ✭✭Liam_D

Mark your cleaning rod with a Sharpie with a dot beside tha handle, push it in with a brush attached and watch until your dot does a full rotation, when it does this will give you a rough idea of the twist rate ie if it went in 12 inches for one rotation that's 1 in 12 etc etc.
My cz loves lapua club that used to come in a bean tin, I was told these are long discontinued but I still have a couple of tins. I've also used lapua standard which weren't as good but not bad, eley subs and eley standard. The thing I liked about the eley subs was that with the moderator fitted all you heard was the click of the trigger and the smack when you hit the bunny in the side of the head.

Yes put a brush on a cleaning rod and push it up the barrel and count the number of times it turns. So if it's 1 in 16 that means that it will turn once in 16 inches.

The Laupu are now amrketed as the SK range of 22lr ammo and you can still get the 500 round tins, it makes for cheap shooting.

As with you my CZ Style liked the Laupu and Eley subs and would group 1/2" @50m

Went out thismorning to do this test, grand & calm. Zeroed rifle with Eley subs at 70yrds.Gun is cz452 style .22lr with 3-12x44 hawke with sr6 reticle. zeroed at 70yrds each mildot after that goes up in 10's,so 80,90,100,110,120.

Rite pic no.2 is first test.Top left target is Eley subs.Aim point is 1/2" black dot.Good group 1" @70yrds. Same zero but used cci stinger.aim point is lower r/h/s target & bullets landed in top r/hs target.4 good shots group 1.5" & 1 flyer.
Pic no.3 using same zero of 70yrds with subs i put the target out to 100yrs and aimed at the top l/h/s target they hit the lower target, about 7" drop but grouped within 2".Then used cci stinger & aimed at lower l/h/s target & got the group on the top r/h/s group 3"
Picno.4 eley subs i stayed at 100yrds and used the 3rd mildot which represents 100yrds & aimed for the centre bull on target top right, group 2".then used remington yellow jackets & aimed at the bull shown, group 2".
Pic no.5 shows subs again at 70yrds & then at 70yrds with the yellow jackets aiming at the lower l/h/s target i gothe group above,4 shots inside 3/4" & 1 flyer(that was the first bullet). bottom l/h target was a test,i went back to 80 & 90yrds and used the 1st & 2nd mildot which represents these ranges & they were bag on.
All in all id be confident using yellow jackets out to 80yrds and subs out to 100 with more practice. Im very happywith the results. Best bullets for MY gun is eley subs & yellow jackets.
Pic no.5 was a sloppy group with subs, there was magpies down the field from me so rushed & headed off to see if i could get a shot but no look.

Eley subs are the ones. Low report, consistent and they pack a punch. Dropped a fox at 98 meters (new lazer range finder :-) ), but the important thing is to know where to shoot, and how to get your round to that impact point.

Untill you can find a round for the 22 that you can consistently perform with on the range at varrying distances then don't go after game/vermin.

its prob the cheapeat round you could get for the 22 but the fedreral american eagle is working the best with my cz 452 lux there cheap as chips but the work way better than say cci minimags or any of the subsonic stuff ive tried remington cyclone (crap)remington subsonic(crap)lapua rifle match and standard plus both ok but nothing spectacular cci subsonic the best of the subsonics yellow jackets useless at 100 meters all over theplace ive tried the federal bulk pack 525 box not great eley subs middlin been trying to get cci velocitors or stingers for ages but cant find them anyone know where i could get a few boxes of each or anything i havent tried cheers
