and how can i stop it if at all? When the waters switched off by the council, it drains from my tank to the mains. Can i stop this from happening?

It doesnt drain to the mains, it's draining down to you dhw cylinder, toilets, wash hand basins etc... Your supply is most likely stopped well before you realise because of this.

no the tank empties, the cylinder, toilets etc stay full! Unless i use them then they will not refill.

How are you so sure it is draining back into the mains. You must have some strange plumbing, as the water would have to have some direct connection to the water in the tank in order to siphon back to the mains. Not very likely. This should not be happening anyhow, as the stop cock from the mains on the street is supposed to have a non return valve to prevent potentially contaminated water returning back into the fresh water supply. I'd say barfly1 is bang on.

    HI, im a plumber.

your tank empties when mains supply stops through fixtures and fittings ie any hot or cold feed in your house.

mains water coming into properties are fitted with a non return valve at entry point to guarantee water in your house will not pollute mains water for an area so your tank water definately will not go back into the mains..

If, when the mains is off you don't use any taps or showers ect... in the house, then it won't drain.

The other cause could be... you have a burst pipe somwhere you do not know about yet.
