Walking in Cooley mountains

Had a trip up to Cooley peninsula today and it was very enjoyable. I was suprised at how many people were out walking on the slopes around Sliabh Foy. Had a brief chat with one man but didnt ask for information on the routes.

I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me where to get maps for the area or point out a few walks. I would have my kids 12 & 9 both fairly good walkers with me but we usually walk around where we live.

Its a stunning area and I plan to go back up in the next few weeks and a few picnics during the summer.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for that. Its a great start.

I was looking at a map in Carlingford earlier today and it had "The Lumpers" on it. Where is this?

The Lumpers is in Ballymakellett, Ravensdale. You get a lot of peoole walking from the Lumpers car park over to Omeath and vice versa.

You`ll get all the maps you need from the Tourist Information office in Carlingford. Also have a look at Annaloughan Loop. Its a nice walk, great views over Dundalk bay and its ideal for beginners/kids.

I have just gotten into this thread. The walks around Carlingford are fantastic. I don't know how experience you are in hillwalking but I would say if you are planning to climb Slieve Foye, you would need to have map and compass skills and also proper hillwalking gear and hiking boots. (That NO JEANS). The weather is very changeable up there and when the mist comes down, it is very difficult to see your way around the top. Here is the Slieve Foy Loop which does not take you up the the top but through the forest and then just above the forest line. You will have the forest as your guide.

Also here is a Youtube Video of the Tain Trail. Enjoy...
