    Part of my work is to act as a buffer between myself/the front door and my boss, i.e., to keep some of the stupid stuff off of his desk. Our front door is coded and there's a buzzer for visitors. There's also a sign which clearly states visitors must check in at reception. I can buzz people in without getting up if I know them or if I'm on the phone. I've taken to going out and meeting the person at the front door partly as a means of finding out what they need. If I didn't do this and buzzed them in many would simply breeze on through. Quite a few do this even if I meet and try to greet them. I think for a minority it's that they think they've a 'right' to bruise on through because their kids are in the building.

    I'm posting to get this off my chest and I lack confidence in the communication skills department. I at a bit of a loss when it comes to knowing how to deal with people who are pushy or just fly past you. I don't think I can run after them, obviously I can't shout down the corridor or the like. I've taken to be a bit more immediate when greeting them now, rather than ask if they're OK, I cut to the chase and ask if they're here for a meeting or want to collect someone. At least that way I get some idea and can hold them in reception whilst I offer to help them out or else I go and fetch their child. I don't know how to be more assertive at the front door or how to prevent people who just want to rush on through.
