    Hi there,

Im a first arts student who isn't very happy in NUIG. I don't know why exactly I just amn't :( .
Iv made some really good friends and have had some fun, but I'm genuinely considering dropping out because of the subjects I picked. Also I have missed a good bit of time because I couldn't face going in to these subjects that are just not right for me....
So basically I'm not really sure of all my options???

Is there any way I could drop out now yet do the same course next year with different subjects? If so what's the story with fees and money, how much would I have to pay and that and what impact would it have on grants?
What other options do I have, maybe I should just carry on with what I'm doing and see out the year, but theres a part of me that wants to leave now and just work non-stop until next September and save and save for fees and things like that....
As ye can all probably see I'm very confused so any advice anyone could give me would be very much appreciated :D Thanks a mil :D

I would suggest talking to someone in the college such as "an access officer" or class tutor before you make any rash decisions.

You more than likely wud have to pay to do the course over again next year,
but if it was just a few subjects, what if you could finish off this year and just do the few subjects you want to change, that way maybe you could work part time and go to college!

Talk to the dean of your faculty.

As far as I know if you drop out now you will only have to pay half-fees if and when you decide to return to third-level education. As for the grant you should talk to your county council.

I cannot stress this enough - you should get in contact with the dean of your faculty. They deal with this stuff all the time.

Look at it this way, do u actually have anything that you could be doing instead of college?
Its the only reason im staying in engineering, because i literally have nothing better to do. Im really just wating till they kick me out :P

That's a dodgy strategy. I did that and I'm now in my seventh year in college...

    Hi Op,

I presume you are doin Arts??.. I picked my subjects in 1st year and ended up really hating one of them and the thought crossed my mind to drop out like you. I decided to meet with the dean of arts and she was really nice at the time. It was around November time and she allowed me to change subjects and it was the best decision i ever made! Contact the dean asap. Even at this late stage there may be something they can do for you.
    Best of luck!
