Getting HD signal to new HD tv?

Got a new LG Full HD tv as a Christmas present. It's brilliant and looks great connected to xbox at 1080p.

Question is - can I get normal tv stations in HD? Do I need to buy a Hd receiver or something? Have tried to research this but my head is starting to hurt! :(

The tv is this LG one here - http://www.lg.com/ie/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-lcd-tv-32LD450.jsp

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

This model seems to be MPEG4 compatable, so you should pick up RTE2 in HD if you plug in a suitable aerial and you are in the proximity of a DTT transmitter - where are you located?

Alternatively get yourself a satellite dish and a HD Receiver, preferably Freesat

According to this thread, that TV is Saorview compatible.

Currently, RTE2 is broadcast in upsacled HD, should be native HD later in the year, with other Irish stations to follow.

You'll need a UHF aerial to receive this. An indoor one might suffice if you're in a strong signal area, (ie near a window, facing a transmitter probably), or an outdoor/attic aerial otherwise.

The other option is HD from satellite. For this you'll need a dish, LNB, cabling and a HD receiver. There are loads available. Check satellite.ie and freesat.ie for prices/specs etc.

EDIT: And what the others said :-)

That TV does appear to be Saorview compatible so you will get RTE2 In HD resolution. You will need a UHF Aerial to receive Saorview, depending on your location a small indoor aerial will work fine. Currently RTE2 HD is just upsacaled SD material but when the correct equipment is installed in RTE there should be some true HD content.

The TV channel line-up on Saorview is RTE1 ,RTE2 (HD), TV3, 3e, TG4 and RTE News Now. RTE1 and TV3 will be moving to HD later in the year. Some extra channels including a movie channel will be joining the line-up too. The Irish channels in HD will be exclusive to Saorview so you can't get it on SKY or UPC.

If you buy a freesat HD box and have a dish installed you can get BBC1 HD BBCHD and ITV1HD, Channel 4HD may be joining them on freesat.

Thanks for the info. Based in South Dublin, does that make much of a difference?

    No.

I'm in Bray, and have usable reception from an indoor aerial from Three Rock, so South Dublin should be fine. Just try and place it near a window facing Three Rock for best results.

If you need to buy one, this is recommended, however, even a (metal) clothes hanger and a length of coax should work.

Satellite signals are available almost everywhere, so long as you have a place to put a dish with a clear view to the South/South East. There are hundreds of channels, 5 of which are FTA, in English and in HD (BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV1 HD, STV HD and Luxury Life HD)
