I just noticed a big variation in prtrol prices today. Hills Topaz, Killarney Road Bray are charging 146.9c per litre which to me seems like quite a rip off but they always seem to be one of the dearest around. The average price in other Topaz stations is 142.9 and Applegreen on the Stillorgan Road is giving it away for 138.9

Read an article yesterday about how the oil companies are due to hike prices of petrol up in 3-4 weeks time. We'll have broken the €1.50 per liter barrier by the end of 2011. They're blaming it on a cold winter. I'm blaming it on the OPEC cartel.

    Free market my arse.

OPEC's refusal to pump more oil is causing prices to increase, but the demand of oil is the driver of prices.

Currently China's growth continues to roar ahead as is Inidia's and this is where thed emand is coming from. Add to this the phenomenal cold weather all around Europe and eastern USA, you get more demand and little extra production leading to increased prices.

At the end of the day, taxes are the biggest part of furel prices in most western countries as currently the price from refineries is about 50c for petrol & 52c for diesel, a further 10c goes to the retailers / distributors and every other cent to government coffers.

btw - in UK petrol and diesel have both gone over the equivalent of €1.50 / litre with diesel approaching €1.60 in many areas. ouch! - and a further 2.5% to be added next week bringing petrol to almost €1.60 and diesle to €1.65 - ouch ouch ouch

^^^ I firmly believe thats going to have the affect of driving many many people of the road, price elasticity of demand and all that. No doubt if prices reaches them kind of levels it'll have a stiffling affect on the economy. Its not as if it can be sustained.

I can't wait when bus tickets go up again.... fuel price is a killer for big petrol engines. We all finish driving 1.0 :(

I hope you were being sarcastic...

I wonder what the average Chinese motorist is paying at the pump?

Yes, but this is a balancing act.
If they don't like the price they are getting, then they can simply produce less, thus increasing demand.

Yes but their motor tax rates are a lot less than here, so they have more tax per litre.

If I was driving a high consuming car I would prefer to do so in the UK than here.
