Why are ads stupid/infantile/patronizing?

I'm just wondering why this is so? How do they shift products with them if they're so unappealing for the reasons cited? Even when an ad tries to be funny or ironic it makes me groan, its about the same or worse as new simpsons humour.

Are you talking about advertisements on tv for tooth paste and pizza etc...?

If so when an Ad comes on tv i just change the station, never watch them ever.I simply switch the channel until what i was watching comes back on :D
I find them boring and waste of time, they dont encourage me to buy anything or want anything.

If you arent talking about what :o

I have to say Christmas tv on sky movies and Irish channels has been a major let down and we are paying for rubbish along with their mediocre ads.

Yes, the ads piss you off to no end, drive you demented when you see them every five minutes, and you probably want to hit your head against the wall to get the "Go Compare" tune out of your head.

    But you remember them.

If ads were just PC World-esqe 'show the product, give details, give prices, no gimmicks', then it would probably be pretty tough to differentiate them in the shop. Marketers/advertisers need to be able to distinguish their product, either through the brand name, packaging, advertising campaign, jingle, slogan, mascot/character, etc.

The more annoying and repetitive an ad is, the more people talk about it, more publicity - More people might try it out = Profit and incremental sales.

There have been a few occasions when I have consciously resisted buying a product because the ad is so totally irritating.
