Well I got out this morning for the first shot after the xmas hols. and wrecking my ankle on the ice. I was to go yesterday but after setting the alarm I forgot to turn it on :o.

This new lett is working out great with plenty of deer being seen, if not actualy getting shot (I'm to noisy or just to big). Easy to get through the forest with the drivable tracks.

So got to where I have seen deer before and waited for them to come through the trees onto a track where they graize for a while before moving off again up into the thicker woods.
First out were 2 does at 250ish yards, they came and went into the trees. But there was a small rise in the track that prevented me from a good safe shot so I closed down the distance a little.

At 153 yards the does were not to be seen but in their place was a nice buck that I have seen there a couple of times. Those other times I did not shoot and only glassed him. But this was not going to be his lucky day as, laying prone, I put the cross hairs on the vitals and let off a 155gr Hornaday. He dropped on the spot and only kicked twice before going to Bambi in the sky.

I got to use the new Gerber gut hook knife tool that Santa got for me and it made easy work of opening up the buck for the groloch. It takes the standard stanley blades so it will always be sharp. About $12 and comes with a belt pouch and 3 spare blades.

153 yard Fallow Buck, last one of this season me thinks.

That Buck was in perfect condition, bright and alert, plenty of fat on him. I think this lett has excaped most of the harsh weather and even when the snow was down there was plenty of grass visable under the trees. It was only the low tempretures that could have effected them.

Well done Clive. I was yesterday and had no luck but that's the luck of the draw. Glad to see there are plenty of them around.
I think I'll have to go out again tomorrow. :D

I hung this buck up in a butcher friends chiller next to the hind quarter of a big red. It's the first time I've seen any reds. Well it was as big as my fallow, just the hind quarter that is.

True. The reds are something else. Not for hunting solo.
If a fallow buck was a snack box then a red would be a family bucket.
Damn. Now I want a snack box :D

That Gerber was cheap and works well. In one go it cut from the sternum right down to the pelvis bone, it made easy work of something I find I have to take care doing and not to cut into the stomach. Handy Mandy gut tool for $12 or so.
