I guess to see whether they made a mistake or not or have the rules changed again?

surely your not suggesting that the nct service is moving the goalposts when were not looking

i dont think appealing it is ever going to be worth it really when you tot up the time and effort involved for what is a relatively quick and simple repair.

shame about how inconsistent the nct is though.

I had a look as well at their manual

Yep, only reference is for drivers side.

    Page 21.
    Reason for failure :
10 Opening mechanism of driver’s window not operating.

What was the fail listed as on the report?
I would go back and have a word with them.

My own view is that NCT are not that busy now, can get a test within a few days here, however I do feel that in order to keep busy they are failing lots of stuff to keep busy.;)

On what direct experience are you basing your observation?

i think id agree with that.

about three months ago, i brought my girlfriends for ka for its n.c.t. at 8.45pm on a friday night, there were at least 4 other people waiting with me and the car was in the test lane for no more than 10-15 minutes top.

2 weeks ago i brought my vitz for its test in the same center at 9.30am on a tuesday morning. the test without exaggeration took well over 40 minutes, the car also failed on several tedious items.

why such a vast time difference to test two similar sized/ aged cars?

No problem booking NCT. I booked online on Sat and could get any time the following tues.
Took 9.15am and car was on the ramp at 9.05. Guys were standing around.
Both cars in front of mine failed. One had multiple issues but the other had a split wiperblade because of the ice.
Retest €28.50 thank you very much.

Yes a split wiper and before he got his bad news he was telling me about a friend of his whose tail light went off during testing and failed because of it.
He offered to buy one across the road but was told no, retest!

My own brothers diesel car failed on emissions a couple of years ago even though he is a mechanic and got it tested himself. got a time slot for 9am the next morning and yep it passed even though he did not touch the car.

The NCT crew only clean the filters at the end of the day but his mate cleans them after each test..

His point was it's a visual retest, so no charge.

You only get charged if it's to go back into one of the test lanes, ie emissions or headlight alignment etc.

but for a tail light bulb or a split wiper you dont have to pay a retest fee?

So, it should be OK to pass a car with the pedal rubber so worn that the driver's foot might slip off? Right.....

Up until recently I used to be off the opinion that people were only looking for an excuse to go of on one and have a rant when topic of NCT came up but now I can certainly see where people are coming from. I have another thread regarding how I had to retest my car twice. To cut a long story short among other things they failed a prefectly sound brake hose. It was tarnished more than anything but was solid out. I cleaned the hose with emery cloth and wire wool and low and behold same hose passed. When under the car I noticed a fuel line that looks like its about to crumple away with the rust...car was not failed for that.

Also brake test was re-done for both retests. Fair enough I failed first time round for imbalance on rear road brakes and passed second time round after changing the brake pads. Passed with an imbalance of 6% second time round, anything over 30% imbalance being a fail. For the third test the brake test was redone as hose was (suppose to have being) replaced. I ensured tyre pressure was same on both occassions and nothing in boot of car or that either time round...didn't adjust the brakes in the slightest either, just cleaned failed brake hose. However, car was put in a different lane and rear road brake imbalance was 24% but still passed as imbalance was below 30% all the same. The car was driven 100 mile maximum between these two tests and final retest was 3 or 4 days after 1st retest....Something wrong there if you ask me...Are these guys equipment calibrated ever or whats the story?

dont be saying things like that lol

i brought a friends car for an nct and it failed on headlight alignment. brought it off and got it focused up..i was standing beside the lad that did it. brought the car back up and i got called out onto the floor by the inspector to be shown it was not adjusted properly. I had an argument with him about it and asked to be tested in a different lane. i pointed out that the headlight equipment runs on a rail across the centre and all it takes for the rail to kink slightly to through it off...after 5 minutes of this argument he put it on the next lane....and low and behold it passed lol

I'm not condoning anyone to go and attempt to botch up or doctor something as important as a dodgy brake line Technoprisoner but in my case the brake line was perfectly sound, just tarnished more than anything. Im kind of surprised he didn't try to fail you for something else after all that though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭Technoprisoner

i was refering to the calibration part lol and i agree i dont think they calibrate their equipment enough

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 104 ✭✭john.west

Agreed Technoprisoner. I wouldn't have taken too much notice of a few percentage either way but the difference between 6% and 24% seems immense to be fair. In fact for last retest I'm not sure if it possibly failed brake imbalance test and he ran it through again as he went forward as if he was driving onto ramp but let car back again onto the rolling road type thing again...not full sure on that one though
