kids put new game into the Wii and message comes up " Wii System Update ", and "in order to use this software, you must perform a Wii system update" . All their older games work ok. The game is a PAL version. Is it possible I got a wrong game type from shop or do I need to update the Wii and if I do this, will the older games they have, still work ???

questions questions - any answers please. thanks

If you have it connected to the net then don't worry - update away - it won't affect your old games at all.

The Wiis firmware has just had so many changes that some new games need the updates.

I got Donkey Kong Country Returns and Super Mario All Stars at Christmas and both required me to update the Wii. When I did the update it added 4 new channels to the home screen. You don't actually have be online to do the update as they include it on the game disc.

Sorry for hijacking thread but i have a similar problem. My young cousins arrived over yesterday with their wii which they got 3-4 years ago.

they got a game, (wii party i think?) for christmas and when they pu it in the wii it asked something about installng new updates. one of the kids hit no to this question and the wii wont regognise any games since!

I reformatted the wii last night and checked for any available updates but it still doesnt recognise any games!

    any suggestions?? Thanks :)

Assuming the Wii is connected to the net, you need to go into the Wii system settings and do a manual update. You just tell it to search for updates, it'll tell you there's one available, then ask if you want to download & install it. It's foolproof really, so long as you don't power off the Wii, you won't break it.

thanks everyone, it worked. the update must have been on the new disc (Club Penguin) and all running fine now. We don't have the Wii connected to the web but I'm guessing if it was, these updates probably come in automatically just like PC.
