    Bit more information there chief!!!

What kinda driving you gonna be doin

    what kinda mileage

will ya be needing it for anything else, biking, towing etc

anything that you consider a must have

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,115 ✭✭✭Pacifico

Mainly city driving with the odd 200km trip! I probably do about 20,000km a year i'd say.

    Nope wont be towing anything.

Bluetooth, A/C, alloys etc would be essential :)

Don't want it to be painfully slow either!

    <obligatory octavia plug>

15k would get you a fairly new TDIIIIII model.

You beat me to it,didnt see the top half of yer message.

OP should wait till maybe Febuary and buy a new shape 09 Citroen C5 1.6HDI,a class looking motor that wont give any trouble,he'll get one for around 15-16k,ive driven one a few times a lovely drive,im using a 06 C5 Series II which hasnt given an ounce of bother in 105000 kms other than a pair of handbrake cables, the hydraulic suspension is a nice job but most of the newer ones are on standard suspension afaik, they made the hydro suspension an add on which most didnt go for id say.

A new shape C5,you wont go wrong.

Jesus dont buy a citroen anyway. Itll depreciate the fcuk in the next couple of years, by which point most of the electrics will have failed.

Id prefer to fashion a car myself out of wood than drive some of the french yokes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,115 ✭✭✭Pacifico

Yeah i probably should have said, not a fan of French cars either!

Still haven't really found anything, VW Jetta looks ok if a bit boring!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,272 ✭✭✭✭Max Power1

Thats the problem with looking for a cheap to maintain diesel family saloon. There isnt going to be many "exciting" options out there.

How about a Jaguar X Type diesel? Should be some well in your budget.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,115 ✭✭✭Pacifico

Ok if we leave out the saloon requirement what would be the best car for that kind of money?!

Kinda want a 08 too for the cheap tax, might have to increase my budget lol

Corolla 1.4 d4d 08 for that money. Yes its boring but such is life unless you had a little think about the following.
You are doing very little mileage so buy a petrol as you will get more bang for your buck and they are less troublesome then modern diesels.

Maybe an auto Golf TDi. Nicer and better equipped than a Skoda, cheap tax and looks like good value considering the original owner probably forked out close to €30K for it in 08. I wonder would €15K buy it straight?

Ah yes spend a few more grand to save a few hundred a year

Take a step back from your allergy to paying tax for a second and see what you could get for 15K..

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1765361 or
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1499321 for example

    The tax is 614 a year for a 2L, or say about 300 more a year than a 08.

Thats less than 6 quid a week. Do you want to spend an extra couple of grand to save 6e a week?

Mainly city driving won't suit anycar with a diesel particulate filter thing that needs to go into regeneration cycles every now and then, add in that you are only doing 250 ish miles a week and one wonders why do you want a diesel.

You'd get a savage petrol car for €10,000 and you'll have €5000 left to pay the extra tax and the twenty euro a week extra petrol you'll use. Also you won't have DMFs or injector issues to worry about.

The days of a diesel being reliable and troublefree for years are long gone.

Point taken about the tax but I would reckon that the Donegal 320 has been ragged to death, the interior is a disgrace too. The other BMW looks nice but they don't quote the mileage but say it's high, to me that's intergalactic. A4 is nice but would you advise someone to run a diesel A4 mainly on city spins ?

I wouldn't advise any of the 3 of them :) But I do take the tax point you make :)

    Hallelujah! :D

How about an '07 Subaru Legacy AWD automatic for a bit over €9k?

    no-image-large.gif

Or if you want something a bit more upmarket, how about a BMW 5 series petrol automatic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

20k km a year and most of it city driving is not ideal for a modern day diesel engine. All the short trips may well end up with all sorts of problems with the car's dpf (diesel particulate filter) which is expensive to replace.

If you still want something easy on fuel, cheap to tax (though motor tax is a very small part of car ownership) but with no potential problems of modern diesel engines then maybe a Honda Civic hybrid might kill two birds with one stone:

This is what i'd be getting, with €1500 off i'd have €6500 left over for tax and repairs for 3 years.

Is the interior bad, or is it water on the camera lens? ;)

The yellow DL reg would put me off anyway but they are just quick examples I took.

I agree that the OP seems to be in petrol territory too but he did specify a diesel :)

    May I recommend the following...

    <snip>

A 2009 car imported from the UK and priced not too keenly, not a great recommendation really, any 2009 car for sale that is of UK origin screams to me that someone is trying to make easy money.

So i'd be mad going for a Diesel then yeah?!

Unkel was probably on the right track with the Legacy. City driving isn't going to be economical no matter whether it's diesel or petrol. City driving is also particularly suited to automatic transmissions.

3 owners and 28k miles? I'd investigate further before parting with money.

Thanks! Didn't spot the 3 owners...

I'm thinking of going for a 06-07 Accord, 2.0 Petrol and just taking a hit on the Tax. Anyone know if their 2L petrol engine is fairly efficient?

Thanks for the replies so far too!

2.0 litre petrol Accord is pretty good on fuel for the engine size.

If you are considering a 2.0 litre petrol saloon then Unkel linked to a nice Legacy earlier in this thread. Here is another one: http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201029198944329

A neighbour of my parents has a similar one and has had no problems with it and it is lovely to drive. They are cheaper to buy than an equivilant Accord due to Joe Public's unpopularity with things that are a little left field.
