I've a friend starting work in Kazakhstan shortly and I was gonna get him a travel book about the place for his birthday.

I don't suppose anyone has been there and can recommend a good book.

Lonely planet are usually pretty good. They dont have one on that particular country but instead do one for central Asia which includes it. You could have a look at it in a shop ans see if the piece about kazakstan are worth buying it for.

I spent a couple of weeks there in 2009. An amazing and fascinating country. Where is your friend going to work? There are many, many empty spaces. The country is huge, bigger than Europe west of the Urals and only 17 million people. The former capital is Almaty(Alma-Ata) a surprisingly cosmopolitan city with nearly 1.5 million people living there. The capital is Astana and the other major city is Shymkant.

I bought 2 books. 'Kazakhstan' the Bradt Travel Guide and 'In Search of Kazakhstan' The land that disappeared by Christopher Robbins. Both good and the Robbins book is quirky and at times will raise a chuckle. Hope that helps and best of luck to your friend.

Suppose to be moving to kazakhstan at the end of the month for 6 months. Any info on the country would be much appreciated. In particular how much tax would i be paying out there and is the night life any good out there

I'm off there tomorrow for a few weeks.

    Care to share your experiences?
