Spare a thought for the good people on the small island of Bornholm in the Baltic

They have also had record snow falls there recently and the island and it's 40,000 plus inhabitants were completely isolated. The airport was shut and high winds meant the ferry couldn't dock (and the passengers spent christmas aboard).

But for one woman, things got particularly bad. A young woman went into labour and the nearest hospital was 7 miles away. Not a great distance, but the conditions were so atrocious that the first assistance to get to her was a midwife, on skis! The midwife beat the military snow track that struggled with the prevailing weather.

Here's a video of the rescue when the Army finally turned up.

1.30 min on for the good stuff.
