Bringing an Irish reg car back from EU

    Hi

My parents have had their car in another EU country for 4 or 5 years. Tax and insurance are up to date, but based in Ireland. The NCT is three years out of date. They propose bringing it back to Ireland, and I will pick it up from London to drive back to Ireland.

Are there any issues with this? I will apply for an NCT as soon as we get back to Ireland.

    Thanks for any advice.

They were paying Irish tax the whole time? Massive waste of money IMO.
There will be no issues on return however, why would there be? Just apply for the NCT whenever.

    Two things I can't understand....

    1. Why did they pay Irish insurance for 4-5 years while in another country? Did they declare to the insurance company that they were living abroad and if they didn't did they not realise that if they had an accident the insurance company would probably have refused to pay based on the fact that they had moved residence without declaring it?

Either way, the insurance would probably have been much cheaper in the other country so it seems strange to me that they continued to pay for an Irish policy.

    2. Would they not have been better off selling the car in Ireland, buying a banger in the foreign country and then one year before coming home buying a brand new car in that country and importing it tax-free into Ireland?

    Thanks all.

They moved over initially for a few months, to see if they wanted to stay there (drove over from Ireland), they never got around to registering the car in Greece, and it was easier for them to continue with tax and insurance as it was. I know it was all a bit of a waste, since their insurance wouldn't have payed out if anything happened, but they just never got around to transferring it. They have been talking about sending it back for a while, and have just had a friend agree to drive it to England for them (I will collect it there and bring it back). Their other option was to sell it, but a right hand drive car wouldn't be worth much over there.
