OS Not Found...H/w or S/w?

I have an Acer Laptop with Vista. It's been working fine until recently. Last week I wiped my iTunes library, sorted it a little bit and then added the music library to my iTunes again.( It's sizeable enough). It added them fine but when it was just starting to load the album artwork and recognise the intervals between each track the computer crashed showing nothing but a black screen with "Operating System could not be found".

I rebooted tried again several times since still no joy. I also just opened Photoshop, just to see what happened when I opened another processer hungry application, It just froze. I have had the blue screen once also.

My question is whether or not an OS install will do or is it a hardware issue? Also there were no discs with this laptop. The manufacturers say a reinstall CD should have been created as part of the original startup process. Is there a way around this?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Are you saying that you only get this problem when you run certain programs? If so then maybe you can at least still create the reinstall CD, there's probably a menu option to do this.
