im thinking of dropping out of 2nd arts and returning in sept to repeat because i made a bit of a bad decision about 8 weeks through the semester  , i changed subject on medical grounds,

i thought it was the course that was making me feel the way i was when in fact it was the other way around and now that im feeling better im like wtf was i thinking  , and id hate to think about the laughing the arts faculty would do if i tried to change back now upon explaining my situation, especially when its a language.

so does anyone know the situation as regards to grants and btea if i do this ?

I did that before and Its a huge regret (I have still to this day), look at your options seriously before making such a drastic decision. Whilst i wasnt on a grant scheme, If I were you, I would contact admissions and pretend you are a prospective student with a possible serious illness and ask about the grant schemes in relation to forced removal from examinations on medical grounds, and remember hard work and graft could more than likely get you out of this situation. Thats my two pennies worth. And Good luck

sorry im confused you did which, dropped out or changed half way through the semester. maybe i forgot to mention im not dropping out completely im jus dropping out cos i want to repeat 2nd year so i will get to take back the subject i had, if psychology goes wrong for me all ive got is philosophy and thats gonna get me nothing.

oh yeah and what do you mean by hard work and graft could more than likely get me out of this situation? :)

thanks for taking the time to reply anyway whoever you are

Oh excuse me, I thought u meant a total drop out, If its a an absolute nightmare of a course subject by all means switch and forget the faculty laughing (its ur future and education at stake ) and anyway Im sure they'v heard every reason in the book for a mid semester subject change in fact id put money on it. What I meant by graft , is if the subject is merely tough and switching could result in a repeat module which could delay a whole academic year or in the refusal of a grant for a repeat I would seriously consider putting the head down and giving it socks to achieve the grade. In any case , good luck.

but i don't know if they'll let me change back to spanish from philosophy its a bit complicated and you have to talk to each department and ive missed 4 weeks now? supposing i told theem i was gonna drop out over it :D

well thats really calling their bluff isnt it ? My younger brother is doing arts in NUI maynooth and they made him repeat a year cuz he missed one of his modules.

you could try changing back to the subject you want for the second semester, hopefully passing and progressing to third year, and then maybe do the semester 1 module from this year again next year, if you get what i'm saying, then you should only have to pay the fees for one module/subject instead of all your subjects/modules for both semesters, of course all this depending on NUIG letting you do this.

hope this makes sense what i'm suggesting.

Just ask the faculty if you can change back to Spanish. If you've only missed four weeks, then it's no big deal. You could probably just sit the repeat in the autumn and then carry on next year to third year if you pass everything.

Ask someone in the faculty. The staff can be very accommodating sometimes. And they'll probably have a better idea of what the best option is - someone will have dealt with a similar problem before, whereas you haven't and you'll think it's a bigger problem than it is.

theres only one problem with that though ficheall in NUIG when taking a language its absolutely compulsory to o abroad for a year so next year when you have suggested to repeat semester 2 module i would be in spain, so would they actually move that to the following year ?

oh and finally does anyone know when the arts faculty will be back again so i can actually ask about this i cant find anything on the website about when there back or even when were back ?

thanks for all the replies anyway

College is back on the 10th.

It's compulsory for a BA International, not necessarily a BA.
But no, what I mean is - if I understand you correctly - you started Spanish this term, sat through it for 8 weeks, then switched for whatever reason. Since you switched you didn't do the exam. (I'm not sure what the story is with coursework for the subject, so I'll conveniently ignore it.) I'm suggesting that you ask if you can pretend you sat the exam at Christmas and failed it, and continue on with Spanish for next Semester as if that were the case. Then come summertime or August whenever the repeats would be, you sit the Spanish exam and ace it, and then they let you go to Spain for third year.

I could have misunderstood the entire situation though.

Best advice is still to go in and talk to the staff about it - preferably one of them you're on good terms with.
