I left Ireland permanently (USA) with unpdaid CC debt (BoI) around 3k.
There is no intent of return.
    a) can this debt affect my US credit score?
    b) Can they get me here/how?

They can theoretically get judgement in ireland and get it recognised in the State you're living in.

Whether they'll bother for 3k is another issue.

Not a chance they will chase you for it. Just make sure they don't know your current address. Watch things like facebook and you will be fine.
Enjoy your new life in the USA. :)

Will the debt of 3k owed on the credit card be subject to ongoing interest? In which case it would start to mount. If that is the case then i suppose the bank would start to consider whether you would have the means to satisfy the debt before they chased you for it.

If the state where you live has a garnishing order similar to those in ireland (ie your bank accounts in the USA would be under a court order which would remove a certain percentage of money, such as wages, which is put into the account.) then the bank might seek to get such a judgment out of jurisdiction.

    Highly unlikely to happen.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. More and more often cases are being certified for enforcement outside the Jurisdiction and indeed outside the EU. I'd agree based on the amount only, but I'd not rely on it.

The problem is finding where the debtor is hiding. Unless that can be done nothing will happen. For such small amounts the banks won't waste time and money looking. Hiring private detectives and tracing agencies costs big money. It is the reality of the situation.

if your worried about it why not try doing settlement with them . you might get away for around a grand , thats all they will get when they sell it on to debt collector agency anyway

When you open an account in the USA they will require your previous address which will be on your i.d > driving license.

It tends to be both your name and address that are blacklisted!. It will be blacklisted for 6 yrs - so if circumstances change you wont get a mortgage in Ireland for 6 yrs after civil court hearing in your absence.

In relation to them finding you - unless someone tells them where you are they will not find out, and even if they did they prob couldnt be bothered to do a lot- i dont think they really give a sh*t either as its insured and they account for this each year. However if u were to find a way to spend money on the card offline - ie - merchant doesn't contact bank to authorise payments - they will try and stop u.

I must admit the badthought does come to mind.m "Bit of a shame you only hit them for 3k when you could of done them for a lot more." I would be more worried of a meteorite flying down from outer space and hitting me in the head.
Enjoy the USA and forget getting a credit card in Ireland again for along time. (no harm eh)

Hardly seems worth the worry for such a small amount. Surely you could manage to pay back over time via arrangement with the bank. You're telling me your willing to forsake your rich (aesthetically at least) sovereign soil for the sake of 3000€ (plus interest)?

Then again some banks aren't looking too well of late - you might get out of being a lame hack if boi turns out to be a lame duck.
