Brakes crunching.

Hoping someone will be able to help. Over the recent cold spell and come to think of it the one earlier in 2010 aswell, my brakes were making a strange kind of crunching grating sound when applied. After the first cold spell last jan/feb I got the pads replaced. I noticed the same again however in the last few weeks and even now that all the snow/ice is gone. What is causing this? Surely the pads aren't worn again?
Also the abs light came on once or twice while driving on frozen/ rough surfaces in the last couple of weeks.

    Thanks.

It's just the ABS working. There was a thread about it very recently

Did you have all the pads replaced or just a set at the front or back? There are pads both ends and your description of "crunching" noises sounds like worn out pads. Get them checked again.

(of course if it's an Alfa it could be just "character" in which case you should appreciate it. :D )

Its ABS. Thats how it works.

The crunching you feel is yourself trying to stop on ice. It locks each wheel separately to avoid a total lock and slide.

He says he still has the problem even though the snow and ice are gone:
