Sound not working on laptop

I have a HP pavilion dv9000 for 3 years now.

EDIT: REALLY WEIRD, SAYS PAVILION DV9000 ON FRONT OF LAPTOP BUT IN SYSTEM PROPERTIES SAYS DV9500?!

I downloaded a new version of iTunes the other day, and noticed that the icon for speakers has a red circle and white 'x' over it. When I scroll the mouse over it it says 'no audio output device installed', but I don't know how this could have happened.

I downloaded a new driver for Conexant [the speaker driver] and it worked for a while. Then i noticed the speakers would still 'work' [the volume bar was moving] but no sound was coming out.

Turned off the laptop and then turned it on again today and the dreaded red X is back!! Anyone know what could possibly be wrong??

I've done numerous google searches and can't find a concrete answer. Particularly as it was working for a while last night and I didn't download anything new since!!! :(

Do the speakers only change from 'working' to 'not working' when the computer is restarted? Do they ever stop working while you're listening to something or without the computer being turned off? Can you hear sound using headphones when the speakers aren't working?

Please include the name of your operating system in your reply. Also include the name of your audio device and the driver version if you can.

Thank you so much for your reply.

Yes it used only happen when computer was restarted.

At this stage, I've installed so many drivers I don't know which side of me is up! Can't seem to find anything concrete on the HP website.

Regarding headphones - no can't hear any sound at all. The red X is back now and says 'No audio output device is installed'. When I go to Sound through the Control Panel, there are no audio devices installed, and no option under 'Device Manager' for 'Sound/Game' as I've seen mentioned in numerous posts.

It is Vista Home Premium, and i can't see any audio device/driver installed, but from what I remember its Conexant, although I seem to have a Realtek one downloaded too! To be honest, I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to these technological elements!

EDIT: Twas updated with Service Pack 2, whatever that means, but I installed that the other day.

Ok, download and run this utility from microsoft and see if it identifies and solves the problem. Try running it twice, when the speakers are working and also when they aren't.

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/D/5/2D5E5885-1B17-4EB0-8E74-9E8964E97EB0/Mats_Run.AudioPlayback.exe

Let me know whether it works or not. If it dosen't work let me know if it gives any messages.

    Hello Razzuh,
Funnily enough I'd somehow come across that link already and had done that search - same result returned ' Check audio device - not fixed'

Speakers aren't working at all now. Can't get rid of the red X at all.

Half thinking of restoring it to factory settings, do you think this will work? Will it take forever to get all the necessary updates again?!

    Happy new year!

Pity that dosen't work, but it was worth a try. We'll have to try doing things manually. I wouldn't reset to factory settings just yet, you could end up with the same problem again. By resetting to factory settings I assume you're talking about using some kind of recovery software HP put on the machine?

I was just looking back over your previous posts: did this problem only start after you installed iTunes? Or only after you updated to service pack 2? Do you know the date (approximately) the problem began?

Do you have windows 'system restore' enabled (it is by default)? If you do, see if there are any restore points in the weeks before you first noticed the problem, it might help (but I think it's unlikely).

Go to http://www.getsysteminfo.com/ and download and run the utility. This will gather information on services, devices and drivers that are on your computer. After it runs, it will upload the report to their site and give you a link to it. Copy and paste the link in your next reply. I'll take a look at it and see if I can spot the problem from that.

I have recenty repaired a HP DV 9000 with an issue similar to yours but after reinstalling windows the sound still wouldnt work.

The laptop I fixed also had the issue that the network adapters (LAN, WIFI) would come and go as well.

    The reason:
You have a defective Nvidia Graphics chip.

    Google: hp pavilion dv9000 fault

If it turns out not to be a software issue look into reflowing the graphics chip on your laptop

TRY A LINUX livecd,eg mint, runs from cdr,if sound works it means there s a software problem, ignore windows os, re model no.JUST read the label,on the laptop, underside, eg hp 9000v.Google hp your model no no sound.

    Hi stripysocks85,

All the best for the new year.

Are you sure that the Conexant sound chip is correct.

The HP sound drivers for the DV9000 series of notebooks seem to be for the Realtek High-Definition Audio.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=2093&lc=en&cc=au&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3467070#N176

The page contains the current drivers and a link to the previous sound drivers.

Let us know how you go.

Hi lads, just to chip in here, the dv9000 you see is part the model series, mine is one of the dv9500 series, a dv9565ea, with conexant audio, originally had vista, upgraded to win7, i too had the "no audio device detected" on vista for a while, a reinstall solved the issue, but i think when i was came across a similar problem on a website it seemed that my problem could have been due to the audio service not runing, although if windows could not detect an audio device i thought, its hardly going to run the audio service.

on a sidenote- my graphics card (nvidia 8400M) crapped out about two years ago too, and if i'd known about the nvidia graphics card issue, it would have saved me the €284 it cost to send the laptop back to HP to replace the motherboard!

in win 7 though, as a previous poster suggested, the nvidia chipset is a PITA, all fixable though, such as using vista drivers for the LAN networking card, (supposed to be gigabit, had to set it at 100FD to get it to work), the infamous "battery not charging" problem, and the USB slow transfers!

anyway, i dont think it's anything you downloaded, i think that was just coincidental, BUT, try a rollback using system restore to before you installed Vista SP2, as its entirely possible SP2 installed a "new" version of the conexant audio drivers which sent your system tits up... :(

Thanks guys for the updates. So much info!

    UPDATE:

I created the 'Recovery' CDS with the intention of wiping the computer as I probably have too much rubbish on it anyway.

Pressed F11 on startup and it took me through recovery & was delighted to see the sound icon back!

    HOWEVER:
1] It didn't ask me to insert the recovery discs I have made, so did I do the wrong thing?

2] THERE IS STILL NO SOUND!! At least its DETECTING the audio drivers or whatever now so I will list them here as it might help:

Speakers: Conexant High Definition Audio [Working]
SPDIF Interface: Conexant High Definition Audio [Working]

Microphone under 'Recording' is also Con HD Audio and also says working, but I have no sound.

When I play a file in Windows Media P, it shows that it is playing and the volume bar moves but no sound [and yes I checked MUTE!]

Also, there is a final problem. I have noticed that my Card Reader [a 5 in 1] isn't working. It's integrated and I use this often for my SD card for my digital camera. Don't know when it stopped working but the blue light is constantly on and it won't read the SD card when I insert it.

Time for a new laptop?! :(

Wow. Looks like double dutch to me!!

I will also run the Microsoft Fix It application now to see if anything turns up, as before, the speakers had the red X, whereas now, they don't!

Thanks so much for your help. This talk of graphics card and such is way over my head but don't want to leave it into a PC shop as I'm lost without it & need it for work!

Also tried plugging in my headphones to see if it would work there and nothing, only the sound it makes when you plug in your headphones to the laptop so there's SOMETHING there! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,877 ✭✭✭stripysocks85

So I tried to run the Microsoft Fix It thingy. Said I needed to reboot first [I had installed AVG earlier & not rebooted] so I did this.

SURPRISE SURPRISE when it restarts, the damned red X is back!

I'd say its a lost cause lads!! :(

Razz, I'll do the 'getsysteminfo' thingy again in case there's anything new there.

Your getting a lot of stuff thrown at you in the last couple of days. I'll try to summarise everything here for you.

The getsysteminfo reports were useful, posting both of them was a good idea. Unfortunately, no solution jumped out at me. I can think of many possible issues that could be causing the problem and that makes things very complicated. The fact that you're experiencing a number of problems that may not even be related complicates things further. We'll ignore the card reader for now. We'll also ignore the problem of no sound even when the audio device is detected.

In the report from when there was no audio device, I found a number of error messages (such as 'IRQARB: ACPI BIOS does not contain an IRQ for the device in PCI slot 13') recorded by windows last time you booted. From these, I'm going to say that the driver you have is ok, and that either you have
    • a) there's a problem with drivers or firmware of something else on your computer (other than the audio device itself).
    • b) a windows problem or some compatability issue.
    • c) a hardware problem.
The first thing to do is to try updating as much as possible. I noticed that your BIOS and drivers are out of date. Go to the link below. I think your model should be one of the ones listed here. If you don't know, use the link on the right to 'automatically detect'. Once you have your model number, go to the 'software and driver downloads' page for that model and download all the updates. Make sure you get (driver-audio, driver-modem, and BIOS).

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/pfinder?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ie&destPage=pfinder&docname=c00033108&query=dv9000

After installing all those and restarting, go to windows update and download and install updates.

At this point, if it still dosen't work we need to try and work out whether the problem is only occurring in windows. As someone else suggested already, you'll need to burn a CD. Click on the link below and download the file (it's big so may take a while):

    http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/10/linuxmint-10-gnome-cd-i386.iso

To burn this disk image to a blank CD you can use Roxio Data Creator (it's on your laptop). Look for the option to 'burn from image file'. Once you've done this, restart your computer with the CD in the drive and you should be prompted to boot from CD. Once it has booted, see if your sound works.

If it still dosen't work, it's almost sure to be a hardware issue. If so, you could look at getting a repair, but I think it's likely to cost too much to be worthwhile. I'm guessing you bought this about 3 years ago. Your other option would be just to live with it. SligoTechGuy mentioned a 'reflowing' solution above, but it's high risk (you put parts of your laptop in the oven), so I wouldn't recommend it for a sound problem.

Thanks a lot. You have been a fantastic help to me. Thanks for taking the time to explain things more simply to me!!

I shall follow the instructions as you have listed & update you.

    Thanks again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,877 ✭✭✭stripysocks85

    So. Update!

Tried that first link and they weren't the right models, tried the 'automatically detect' option & it wouldn't detect anything!

Had 111 updates to install, so selected the Net something 3.5 from the list that it said I needed and installed taht, and I was turning my laptop off it proceeded to download the other updates! Computer switched off from overheating
& when I turned it back on again just now, THERE IS SOUND!!

I wont get too excited because undboutedly it'll disappear next time I reboot, but at least its not a hardware problem.

Thanks for all the help Razzuh, if Ic ould give you more thanks, I would!!

You're very welcome. About the model number: did you see this page?

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?tmp_renderType=findModel&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ie&docname=c00033108

It shows you how to find the model number yourself using the HP software on your laptop.

Good to hear you had sound back. Did it go away again? Unfortunately, just because you got it back once dosen't mean it's not a hardware problem. It could still be a bad connection (so it comes and goes).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,877 ✭✭✭stripysocks85

    Good morning!

Will download the HP Support Assistant & see if that can find my info more accurately.

So the sound DID disappear again. I didn't download anything, just put it on mute for a while. Then went to youTube to watch a few music vids - looked like it was playing, but no sound!! :(

So I left it, and downloaded the rest of the updates that hadn't downloaded previously. Restarted my computer this morning and the red X is back!

It's a mystery!! I could manage without sound if the blasted thing didn't make the loud beeps. Makes me jump out of my skin!

Is it worth leaving it in somewhere do you think?

I vaguely remember some offer that was on where if you returned your computer [within 4 years of buying it I think] then you could get 175 off a new laptop? I don't have the receipt for my laptop is the only thing, but got it at Xmas 3 years ago.

    New update:
Downloaded the HP Support Assistant, found my product/serial number and Razzuh, as it turns out, you were right with the first link you'd sent me and the Computer it returned as mine was the Pavilion dv9605ea, even though mine is a dv9500!!! This put me off before as I didn't want to download drivers for another model in case it would feck things up, but it seems that's the one thats listed for me??

So I updated the 2 audio ones and another one [cant remember which one]. Whilst it was updating & installing, the red X came and went periodically but once they were all installed, guess what! I have sound! Real sound from YouTube and everything!! So hoping that when its rebooted the sound is still there!

Thanks for all your help. I feel totally stupid now that it was such a simple problem that has caused me heartache for the last 2 weeks! But hopefully it's sorted now and I don't have to trade it in just yet :)

    Thanks Razz :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭Razzuh

That sounds promising. You should have mentioned that you were getting the loud beeps, I can help with that at least! They're ridiculously loud.

In case they come back, here's how to get rid of them:

    • Go to 'device manager' again (click start button -> type 'devmgmt.msc' in search box and hit enter)
    • Once device manager opens, click the 'view' menu and select 'show hidden devices'.
    • Scroll down to 'non plug and play drivers' and click the little + to expand the list.
    • In that list of 'non plug and play drivers' there should be one called 'Beep'. Right click on 'Beep' and select 'disable' in the menu that pops up. When you restart the computer there shouldn't be any beeps

Haha if only I'd known this! The beeps were frightening the bejaysus outta me and making me jump about a foot off the ground!!
Sound is still working and I am so f**king happy! Thanks for your help :)
