Ranking System

Ok, so I'm sorry if this has been asked 1000 times before, but just a question

I can't get out of bronze, it's like I'm trapped

I've played over 300 games, in which I have 173 and lost 143 (if you have signatures turned off). My WLR is 54.7%

Would I be right in saying that no matter the league if your wlr hovers around 50%, you wont move at all? Sometimes I roflstomp people on a ten streak or so but sometimes I do lose maybe 2-4 in a session

Any ideas, or do I just need to never lose anymore :o

Basically, you have to win games against Silvers regularily and then you'll get promoted.

    took this from battle.net

    Short answer:

Basically you are ranked through the system trying to put you into a league where most people are at the same skill as you, which means that they will win as much as they loose when they play against you. There is no win loss ratio except in the highest of diamond and right when you get placed since the system automatically tries to match you against players that are just as good as you. which means everyone will end up with a 1 win per loss in w/l ratio.

Who you get matched against is decided by how good you are performing at the moment and is not restricted to your league.

    Long answer:

    1. How does the system match me against other players?

What really decides who you are matched against is not which league you are in, this is a common misunderstanding. What really decides who you get matched against is a secret measurement of your skill compared to others. Let's call it "TrueSkill" rating.

Your trueskill is the same as other people at the same skill level as you, people who if you play against over and over again will have a 1/1 win/loss ratio. If you have a good starcraft day and manage to go on a win streak your TrueSkill will quickly go up and you will get matched against tougher opponents immediately. And the same thing goes for when you start to loose more, your TrueSkill goes down.

Your TrueSkill is not visible anywhere and blizzard has yet to reveal more details about it.

    2. How do the placement matches work?

Your initial preliminary (this is very important, never regard your placement as anything but preliminary until you have at least 30 games under your belt) placement is decided not only by your win loss ratio in your placement matches but also something more, possibly your enemies TrueSkill or game length and different game scores, since some people who get 5 wins come into plat and some into gold. It is not possible to get into diamond from just placement matches and it is hard to get into platinum.

If you have losses your placement will also get affected by how good the player(s) you lost against are.

    3. How do league demotion/promotion work?

The actual league you are in (probably) gets decided by your TrueSkill rating in proportion to every one else's, so lets say that you are in the bottom 35%, that means that you belong in bronze, if you are in the 36-50th percentiles, that might mean you should be in silver. (these percentiles are just random numbers pulled out of the air, no one knows the exact distribution yet)

So let's say your true skill rating gets bumped up and you are one of the players that belong in gold instead of silver now, you are frequently getting matched against players that are in gold and you win about half of them, doesn't that mean you should directly get promoted?

Yes, but only if this trend continues, what if your TrueSkill goes down the next day? Therefore the system makes absolutely sure that you in fact belong in the new league you might get promoted to, which is why you experience a delay. This keeps players from getting bumped in and out of leagues all the time. Exactly how long this "research phase"/delay is no one knows yet.

    4. Extra section: Win loss ratio and global ladder.

Since the system matches you against people that are on the same skill level as you your win/loss ratio will stabilize itself around one loss per win eventually. This is why a global ladder with all leagues in them is just pointless, since there is no way (except for the mysterious TrueSkill) to rank people below diamond against each other properly. People with higher rating have only played longer in their league than the others and everyone has the same win/loss ratio.

In top diamond and bottom bronze win/loss does matter however. Which means that you can have a proper ladder covering these players... Blizzard probably aims at implementing a top diamond ladder through the so called "Pro league" that they have mentioned several times before.

it could be your mmr gets so stable that bnet constantly match you with bronze and you lose to some cheesey silver occasionally when bnet decided to give you a chance to 'level up' :P

or simply because of bnet is fcked up :pac:

the ladder system doesnt work well anyway.. im really bad at starcraft at the moment.. im getting experience each game but after playing a lot of games ... each game i play against people much better than me .........

Im in the same boat - higher than 50% WLR ratio and sometimes I play against silver and win / lose but lose more I think than I should to be promoted.

Cant wait for ladder reset ..... might allow me to start higher than bronze.

I started getting pitted against silver players, won against a lot of them and even when I did, it said "teams even" for some of them, some of them said them favored, I thought I would rank up but still no =[

    Keep at it.

The match making system pits your against players it thinks that have equal skill to you.

if you find yourself consistently player silvers then its only a matter of time.

To be honest you still shouldnt still be in bronze Ramze mate. You are like 600 points ahead of 2nd place in your division and have the decent win % of 55. You are also hammering silver players consistently. There is an issue there I think.

I've been playing crap last few days, need to get better

Im currently at 1964 points in bronze and in a similar boat it seems ... one other dude around my score on rankings and then top bronze with me around 2300. I know I can reach that - just have had the energy / time to play recently.

lol chaz i think it is very weird! keep trying tho! remember you can jump league in this system! i am sure if you focus on your 4gate timing you should be easily beating all the bronze :3

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭RoyalMarine

rofl chaz i checked the graph on your sc2sig, your 1v1 are in diamond rank lol but somehow you are in bronze...interesting haha!

same to ramza lol i really think bnet is fcuked up! otherwise the stat from sc2sig is not accurate or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,006 ✭✭✭Ramza

It's dumb, just did an 8 game streak, one guy silver, one gold and 6 bronze. Lost to two silver Zerg then won against a silver Zerg now =/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭Yurple

i really think the ranking system is off... i keep getting players much better than me... like i feel like I have no chance what so ever! it really makes this game not enjoyable anymore !

Kept playing tonight, won 5 in a row, then lost one, then won to a game where I was favoured, finally got promoted to Silver!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,084 ✭✭✭✭Kirby

Nice on Ramz. About damn time too. Bloody battlenet and their wonky formula :p

I'll probably be seeing you in gold in no time.

    sc2plat.jpg

Ive no idea how the ranking system works. Ive been Gold rank 1 for so long with 2500points. I imagined that if i kept beating platinum leaguers often enough id get bumped up. Which is what ive been doing, i tend to win more then i lose against platinum but then there is the odd time ill get beaten by a silver / low ranked gold player. I thought if i beat a diamond player i would be promoted. Nope beat a gold player today and jumped leagues. Its a newly created division with everyone joining today.

Did anyone else get a promotion with a newly made division ?
