Car keeps revving when i accelerate

Ive a 2005 clio, 75k miles and just recently when i go to accelerate hard the car revs up, especially when accelerating going up a hill. I thought it may be the spark plugs (last changed 25k miles ago) but surely they would have the opposite effect if they were needing replaced? Otherwise i thought it may be the clutch as it sounds like i'm accelerating with the clutch partially down. any ideas?

Thats what I feared. Can it be fixed or just needs replaced? Roughly how much does it cost? (ball park)

Ball park would be anything from €250 - €700 depending on the car.

Clutch will need to be replaced.

Not what I was hoping for after xmas. I'd also imagine most parts dealers are closed till new year. Tried calling liffey valley renault but no answer. Would it be best buying one from scrap and pay someone to fit it?i'm hoping to sell car in 6 months anyway

The clutch kit itself should only be around the 150 Euro mark ...so fitting an unknown one from a scrappy is false economy.

Labour will make up the biggest part of the bill

Thanks, I should be able to find someone easily enough to fit it once I have the clutch bought. Is it a big job?

Depends on your car. On some it's really easy, on others access is difficult and lots of stuff needs to be disassembled to get at it.

Don't know what it's like on the Clio

On a fair few cars it involves dropping the Transmition,so yep, its big job, Second to removing/replacing engine.

You have to do it on all cars, drop the transmission. OP your probably looking around 3 hours labour.

For a clutch change you'd be talking €350 form an indy mechanic.

Ring around a few places first.

Some Kadetts and Astras, you could pull a shaft out of the end of the gearbox to change the clutch through an access panel on the bellhousing without having to separate the box from the engine. I thought this was an unusually good bit of design.

Kadett was the car the Astra replaced in Ireland, don't think I ever saw one later than a 1992 reg.

My brother has the same problem with his 2002 Clio, high reving between gear changes and when you hit 5th gear it sounds like your in 3rd with the roar of the engine. The other thing I noticed is his clutch pedal has to come right out to the near edge for it to disengage
