    Hello,

Myself and a few others in the college are trying to start an atheist society similar to other colleges but are looking for other Trinity students who may be interested.

    We have a forum setup:
    http://dusas.infravision.org

It's mostly a contact point for any interested TCD students but of course it's open to students of other colleges and the public in general and we'd invite you to join.

    Kind Regards,

    Sean.

I find it surprising that Trinners don't already have something like this.

It's be tried twice already in the past five years and turned down twice on the grounds that:

    1. Theological and Metaphysical society already cater to such an audience.
    2. Not enough student support was demonstrated. We had the minimum number of signatures but the panel weren't convinced because many of the signatures while in favor of the society being established weren't in favor of actually joining the society. They want to see demonstrated sustainability which is fine by us.

I believe that while the theo and metaphys socs do a very good job at what they do they aren't necessarily critical of religion nor advocates of scientific/rational thinking. Regarding student support, it is as they say a bit like herding cats even though the colllege is full of people going to hell.

@Glas, I'd encourage you to sign up to the forum and introduce yourself. However we are a provisional group and not a recognized society so it's not set up.

Sounds like organised religion to me!

You may get some support from Trinity prof David McConnell who, as the new president of the Humanist Assoc of Ireland, might be keen to support something like this in the forlorn hope of advancing his agenda.

I would think that most young students (though not known as generally being fond of religion) would find attending your meetings a bit of a bore. In the past, Atheists used to be lumped together with Trotskyites and Anarchists.

There are people who think a meeting composed of atheists, Trotskyites and Anarchists would be boring?

I guess I have to admit I'd probably find it interesting myself :D

Hmm... I guess that would make sense because the comparisons tend to
focus more on the Communistic, Hitleristic, Marxisistic, Darwinistic,
Anti-Christmasistic, Maoisistic or just plain Heartlessisistic tendencies of the
Atheistic Atheists lately. Moving up in the world, or down...? :pac:

Apologies for dragging up an old thread but what's the story with the Society for this year?
