I've spent a(nother) couple of evenings trying, and failing miserably, to get my MP3 collection in some sort of order. The bulk of my "keepers" are on a 16gb usb drive but mostly in huge folders organised according to a complex formula based loosely on what sort of stuff I was mixing at a given time, when I transferred them from the desktop, and how far into the last sorting attempt I got before I just sat back with a glass of wine and listened to/watched something instead.

So it struck me. What I need is a way of assigning a number of tags to a track, rather than having to decide on one single genre for a track. Similar to the tags for posts and ads on boards, if I could choose a track that fits a couple of genres or mix types I could tag it, say, House, Disco, Piano, Vocal for e.g. Another might be Techno, House, Deep etc.

It would also require the means to search for those tags too of course, but it would mean rather than flicking through gigs of files waiting for a name to jump out at me, I could just pull up the tracks tagged with what I'm listening to or mixing.

The more I type here, the more I'm gripped with the fear that the first four answers will be "of course you can do that with WMP, Real Player, Traktor, Winamp, Word, Excel, Notepad etc." :o
