PS3 HDMI problems on Toshiba TV

For some reason my Toshiba (32A3000P) doesn't seem to recognise HDMI input from my PS3. I've already tested the console and the HDMI cable on the Sony TV in the other room and it worked absolutely fine at 1080i the moment I plugged it in, so it's obviously something with the TV and nothing else.

When I go to the HDMI 'channel' on the Toshiba it switches from a general blue screen to black with no sound, but I can at least tell from that it's definitely recognising the cable. I've messed around with the TV settings and nothing changed.

After a bit of googling Toshiba's are definitely known for having HDMI problems and nearly all the suggestions I found were to turn on the PS3 using the general scart cable and manually switch the output to HDMI in Display Settings. However when I do that and it tests the new display it still goes straight to black (even when I swape from the AV to HDMI channels). A few other people have said things like holding down the PS3 power button a certain length of time until these different blue lights flash but that seems to be aimed at the older PS3 models and not the slim one that I have.

So any suggestions at all? I'm sure ye can understand the importance of playing a PS3 in HD and nothing else so this is something I'd really like to get fixed!

    Cheers.

Had a similar problem before, and still run into it every now and then.
    • Theres nothing wrong with the PS3. Holding the power button is used for issues on the older models.
    • Plugging in both the scart lead AND the HDMI cable seemed to work for me the first few times on my old tv. This worked for me when I switched to the HDMI cable in the display settings. Seems to be the most successful solution from my experience.
    • Try a hard reset on the PS3. Have the HDMI lead plugged in as the default display. When you're about to turn it off, hold the power button until it turns off (use this if the PS3 ever freezes also). Then when turning it back on, hold the power button again until it turns on. On my old model this would set everything back to default (themes, audio settings etc) and when restarted I would be prompted to confirm the HDMI input as my display setting. Not 100% sure if it works the same for new models, in work atm so I'll try it myself at home later and get back to ya.
    • Found this, but it isn't good news... http://www.highdefforum.com/flat-panel-tvs/107836-toshiba-hdmi-port-problems.html
Really just sounds like the Toshiba TV is dodgy to me. Got the same info back when I tried googling it. Is this the first time you're hooking up a HDMI cable to the TV?

Thanks, being honest it doesn't look too good. None of the above worked and after ringing Sony he basically told me much the same. It's definitely a Toshiba problem then, something about a HDMI handshake issue for not decoding the PS3 signal correctly.

Toshiba online troubleshooting is basically none existant so I rang them up but their offices are closed (after telling me they're open from 8am-8pm Monday-Friday ) so I'll try them again in the morning. But for an out-of-warranty 3 1/2 year old TV that I've already have problems with in the past I'm not holding my breath.

Mods feel free to move this to the appropriate TV forum since it's no longer a PS3 issue if you wish.

Had the same issue with my old LG TV - ended up giving up on HDMI completely and getting a component cable instead.

I'd say go down the same route tbh, might cost you €10-€20, but that's better than having to splash out on a new TV which is more or less your only other option if your TV is out of warranty

Can't remember if component can handle 1080p, but it does 1080i with ease and you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference between a component and HDMI connection...

The component cable can handle 1080p just fine, depends on the connectors on the TV if it'll show 1080p or 1080i.
I had the 360 connected by component to a Full HD TV, it looked every bit as good as HDMI I've seen on other TVs except for one issue. I noticed some "rainbowing" when a still image with a large area being the same colour was left on the screen for a while. It sounds worse than it is, I nearly wish I hadn't mentioned it. :pac: When watching films or playing games I pretty much never noticed it even when I looked for it after noticing it on a paused picture. :)

Worth sticking to finding some solution, seeing everything in HD is like putting on glasses for the first time.:D

I hadn't realised PS3's could do component cables! I know that's something my TV could definitely handle as I've spent years playing my 360 through them. My TV only goes up to 720p anyway so I wouldn't worry about any difference in picture quality.

Thanks for letting me know, 30 quid on a set of cables if much more appealing than 400/500 on a new TV. I'll still ring Toshiba again tomorrow though and see if I can get the HDMI sorted first.

if you can put together an order over £25 it'll be free delivery too.

Do you remember what the issue was? If it's an old TV I'm guessing it was something to do with HDCP. A lot of old TVs haven't got it which is a bit crap.

Ordered the above cables as you suggested amacachi which came today. Stuck them in, no signal or anything coming from the TV at all. Gave up, started contemplating having to fork out €400 on a new TV, then remembered there's some PS3 settings that could be changed and BOOM! Perfect 720p from the Toshiba.

Thank you, boards comes to the rescue again :D

My Toshiba HD Ready TV recently packed in. I bought another Toshiba to replace it however I'm now finding that the new one, while working with the HDMI cable, is presenting a picture for PS3 games that is nowhere near as sharp as the last one. This is similar to a problem I've been having with the big Samsung HD TV at my parents' house. On that TV Blu-rays play through the PS3 with as good a picture as you would expect. Games on the PS3 however look decidedly SD.

The new TV I've bought is, I reckon, 720p at best - same as the old one. However the picture just isn't as good.

Could this be down to the fact that it's brand new? I've tried adjusting the display settings on the PS3 and frankly there's little difference.

Does anybody know what the problem might be?

    Cheers.

Zombie thread but to answer your question it could be the same issue as mine. The HDMI cable. My Phillips TV could play at 1080i and when I put it in to my new Toshiba max was 48op, I was convinced it was the TV.

I bought a new HDMI cable (xbox360 one for 10 in smyths) and it now plays at 1080p.

I always believed that a cable either works or it just will not work. I was really surprised that the cable fixed it.

I figure there is 2 way comms on the new toshiba to ps3 via HDMI and one way comms on the old phillips to same PS3(my theory anyway).

By the way, when games play on the PS3 they play at max 720p. Blu-rays content is 1080p.

I thought that was the case. So you reckon I should get a new cable? What about the scart? Would it be any use trying that?

Buy a HDMI cable. They are cheap and really the best way to display.

I have an HDMI cable already. The problem is that the display is just not as sharp as on the last TV I had.
Do you reckon it could be faulty while displaying the game at the same time?

Read my posts. Yes cable may be faulty, buy another, they are cheap.

I did read your post. I'll try with another cable.
