Can anyone help me identify the hose in this picture - E46 318i ? I was checking my car after the freeze and found that this hose had disintegrated. Can I tape it up to drive to a mechanic or would I be better off towing ?

    Thanks

Doesn't exactly look disintegrated, looks like normal wear to me. I certainly wouldn't be calling a tow truck out over it!

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know what it is called and will I do damage by driving the car ?

Hi, that looks like a vacuum control pipe. Is the car running very rough?

Is the car an early version of the e46 (i.e. 1997-2001)?

The part number is the part #2 in the diagram linked:

    http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E46/Sedan/Europe/318i-M43/RHD/N/browse/engine/vacuum_control_engine/

I would say it would be fine to tape up a vacuum pipe to drive to the mechanic. The car will either run rich or lean not 100% sure which, either way it's not good for the car long term

    Another good site for parts
    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?kind=P&series=E46&body=Lim&model=318i&zone=ECE&prod=19980700&motor=M43&arch=0

but yeah that looks like it could be sorted with duct tape for now.

That's the air pipe coming from the secondary air pump. It's fine to just tape it up...

Probably doesn't need tape as it's only used on start up, AFAIK...
