So they can be made aware of common problems which can be fixed in future updates?

    Just a theory of mine.

Most of the time they'll be automatically parsed by their analysis service.

Sometimes it will give you a URL to check the results of the crash dump and will tell you which driver/service is to blame for the crash.

    Newbies send the error message.

The rest of us just fix the problem.

    Yes, they do read them!

A bunch of us were going through some Windows crashes that people sent in by clicking the "Send Error Report" button in the crash dialog. And there were huge numbers of them that made no sense whatsoever. ..

..Since the failure rate for this particular error was comparatively high (certainly higher than the one or two I was getting for the failures I was looking at), he requested that the next ten people to encounter this error be given the opportunity to leave their email address and telephone number so that he could call them and ask follow-up questions. Some time later, he got word that ten people took him up on this offer, and he sent each of them e-mail asking them various questions about their hardware configurations, including whether they were overclocking.

I doubt if anyone in Microsoft is going to bother reading all the error message replies.

Another reason for this is to monitor those that are using a genuine copy of Windows and those that are not.

Yep, sent one this morning. Knowing my system it's a graphic driver problem or Kaspersky messing up. Who knows, maybe they'll sort out a long term solution.
