Build a ROM?

How does one build a ROM for a android handset

I'd imagine it's like pulling down a stock google's android source and merging it with handset's specific code and compiling it yeah?

For example, I am using Eclair 2.1, and would like to build froyo out of curiousity...

Any tips/pointers on how to do it?

Roms are device specific and mostly come a 'pre-built'. Some allow you to take the rom and 'cook' your own version. You will probably need to 'root' your phone first to get super-user access.

Have a look at the forums on xda & modaco for your phone. Lot's of tutorials there.

You can only deploy on a dev phone (or a hacked one). You need device drivers specific to the device. Normal consumer phones won't load your custom rom because they have various protection mechanisms to stop unsigned code.
