Clearing an airlock.

Similar to other posters my pipes froze over the recent cold spell. As I'm in the sticks I have my own well so myself and my mate got to work attempting to free the pipes. In the process of digs up the suspected frozen area with happened to hit a pipe with a pick axe and put a hole in it.

No bother. We cut the pipe and put in a join. We managed to free the pipe of ice and I switched on the pump. It did manage to work for a few minutes but the pump was cutting on and off as if airlocked. I've tried everything since to free the airlock including feeding a hose directly into the pump which worked previously when airlocked. However this time I just cannot seem to get it sorted.

Now I'm assuming that it is airlocked so I'm wondering if there is another cure? There is a chance my pump could be snookered but I want to exhaust all other options before going down that route.

Any experts out there have any idea how I'd go about getting rid of this airlock?

Is it a submersible pump or a sucktion pump you are using ?

I'm no expert but I think its a suction pump. Its located in a shed behind the house. Two pipes goinginto the well.

Well, if it is a suction pump and it is not frozen then get pressurised water (with a hose) from your neighbour. Or via another pump out of the bucket.

Switch off the air locked sub. pump.

Connect the hose from the pressurised provisional supply (a powerwasher will do as well)to the airlocked suction pump at the outlet side ( the part leading to the house).

    Flush the airlock out.

Switch off the provisional supply, disconnect it.

    Return to normal.

Heinbloed, thanks for the reply I really appreciate it. Before I read it I went working on the pump and I read somewhere if you connect a hose to the outside tap it would fill the tank upstairs. However when I connect it it seems to have gone back down the well and cleared the airlock. A welcome surprise!!

Thanks again. I'll never take having water for granted again.
