This is for those in the know, with modern buttons on. As far as I knew, washing machines had 3 pipes, cold in, hot in, waste out. What could be simpler!

Got asked tonight to help with a dislocated pipe (hi Schdz!) which was leading to a washing machine. The cold feed pipe had blown itself off the blue stopvalve fitting and let go a load of water onto the floor. Okay, taped back up and retightened its fine again.

    What I couldnt figure was....
    1. What was the strange looking white box on the other side of the valve, it had 220volt markings on it
    2. Is this machine which sits under the kitchen sink, not actually mains fed, but attic tank fed? Why not if?
    3. Why was there an upstairs pump involved that needed to be activated first before we got feed back again?

No idea tbh, but it could be a motorized valve. Can you post a pic?

Should be, but don't bank on it

Because there isn't enough pressure from the tank to supply the washing machine, so its there to boost it to mains level. Just a guess tho

Sounds like a solenoid valve to allow water in when machine is switched on
