Petere Weir's new movie (his first since 2003's Master and Commander), is out this week. Its score on rottentomatoes is currently 88%, though that's only from 16 reviews and many of the positive reviews seem to have serious reservations. Anyone seen it?

Has an 8.5/10 on imdb at the minute, all be it after only 299 votes.

Saw a trailer for it a while ago and didn't really strike me as being one to see, might give it a look though.

Usually put off if Colin Farrell is in something, he's been in some real turkeys.

Couldn't agree with you more about the trailer, it looked fairly ordinary alright.
I'll still be going to see it though, although I doubt it's going to be my favourite of 2010.

Seen it last night, thought it was okay.

Just don't think the sense of despair, hopelessness, thirst, hunger etc was captured. Compared to a movie like Alive, it just falls flat. Shame, as it's a fantastic story.

I always make a point of catching a Weir movie in the cinema. Such a class act film maker.
Currently reading the book before I watch the movie.

Saw the film last night, I was pretty disappointed.

The characters in the film are horribly generic, particularly the hero Janusz and Ed Harris' character, Mister Smith. Janusz is a infinitely wholesome person and shows little diversity in his personality while Mister Smith is your classic movie, "tough guy".

The pace of the movie is quite slow and the walking scenes rapidly become repetitive. I was surprised when I left the theatre that the movie was only 132 minutes long. I'd thought I'd just sat through a three hour epic!

Saoirse Ronan and Colin Farrel's performances where, "solid", but don't expect the two to be garnering any awards for this film. Jim Sturgess played Janusz in the movie and I was a little let down by his performance after all the hype he had received prior to the movie. I was expecting a showing worthy of an oscar nomination from him, but unfortunately I don't think Jim will be invited to the Kodak Theatre on February 27th.

Overall the movie was pretty average. It did have some nice scenes in it but it just didn't live up to what I expected.

    2/5.

Saw the film also last week. Agree with many of the comments above.
I thought also that Saoirse Ronan and Colin Farrel's performances were pretty good and certainly did nothing to add to the weakness of the movie itself.

I thought that the story (while a true one) was totally over-simplified and way too shaky.
The escape scene was over in a minute and the trek across the Himilayas was made look like a trip to spar for a pint of milk - one minute they were in nepal and the next minute hey presto ! India..very simplistic and lacking imagination.

Its not the worst thing I've sat through (see Little Fockers) but I wouldnt be rushing to buy it on DVD !

    2/5
