Got a present of a one for all 9040 pc media remote. Its got a RF reciever, and comes with a basic media browser to use. I'm trying to set it up to use it with XBMC but I'm getting bamboozled by all the technical coding speak that google is pulling up, so I was hoping someone here might be able to help me out.

the four arrow buttons work fine on it for basic browsing around in XBMC. Other buttons on the remote send keyboard inputs (like if I press PLAY it sends "\" or similar). I tried to figure out eventghost but i'm having no luck on finding a total noobs guide to it. Also, the volume buttons are mapped to the wrong buttons.

Im guessing I could alter the keymap with XBMC to program the buttons to do what they're meant to? How do I do that? and is there a program that will tell me what each button pressed sends as an input?

please go easy, Im a total noob to this stuff!

I've made some progress with eventghost, individually mapped each button to an action, its enough to keep me going anyway.
annoyingly, some of the buttons do nothing in PC mode (the four colour buttons for example), so I cant make use of every button on the remote. Also, I have to stop eventghost from running after i finish xbmc, as the buttons that are mapped will no longer respond as normal on the keyboard, for example, when its running, hitting "." does nothing.

I had some of the difficulties you encountered recently, but eventually after some playing around I eventually got xbmc and a generic windows media remote to play nice using eventghost. Not every button works but you should be able to map enough functionality into it. I also have another living room based xbmc setup that uses a small wireless keyboard that works very well with xbmc. it's something to consider.
As a resource for xbmc trial's and tribulations you should check out there forum. Its not very intuitive, but I find its always useful to begin with

Just a suggestion but it sounds as if the media keys are just labeled keyboard keys, in which case I wouldn't use eventghost at all and follow http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Keymap.xml instead.

i made an attempt at this but couldnt find out which button was which etc.

Eventghost let me set it up much quicker, and tweak it quite handily.

Also, it meant not having to re-learn where all the buttons were on the keyboard, I can basically switch the remote on and off.
