"Arann 17S"/RE217 has diverted to Knock due to poor weather at Sligo. This aircraft useually operates the RE227/"Arann 27N" to Knock at 1815(as it normally returns to Dublin from Sligo). As a result RE227 to Knock is cancelled.

Out fo curiousity does anyone know why the Dublin to Knock flight is cancelled so often? I have no interest other than observing that almost everytime I check the Dublin Arrivals/Departures website for other flights it's cancelled!

I agree it is cancelled alot espically lately. In fact its cancelled again this evening. When you ring Knock and ask why they always say its a technical problem with the aircraft.I used the service plenty of times during the summer and on a number of occasions it wasnt the ATR42 operating,i recall being on a Scot Air Dornier 328 and a Fly-Be Sabb 340(more than likely used when the 72's were been painted into Aer Lingus livery)Also an ATR 72 did the run a few times, however those times it was Dublin-Galway(Via Knock).

Don't always believe its a 'Technical' fault. I know a guy in EI and said that a JFK flight was cancelled because there wasn't many passengers and zero cargo.

I am only guessing here but I'd say it is due to lack of bookings on the flight - as said above it seems to be almost always cancelled these days and its unlikely to be always down to tech issues. I think this route will end next year anyway.

I wonder though do Aer Arann still get the PSO subsidies even when they don't run the flights?

Unfortunately from what I am hearing Aer Arann are an airline to avoid these days if punctuality or even safety are your priorities, which is a shame as they were such a friendly regional airline in the past.

It would be dishonest indeed, but imagine a person coming over the intercom 'your flight has been cancelled due to no cargo and little passengers'. There would be an uproar in the airport. Therefor using the typical excuse of 'technical fault'.

Well it could be to do with bookings but if the RE227 to Knock is cancelled then so is the next mornings Knock-Dublin as the aircraft overnights in Knock.Anytime i travelled it was fairly healty loadings except for Sunday's when it was dire.Wouldnt they lose the subsidies if they didnt run the flight? be it with 10 on board or 40.

Could it be full because of all the cancellations?

Lot of general misinformation on this thread.

Airlines don't cancel flights because there are 'not enough passengers or cargo'

Unless.... unless...they can accommodate the booked passengers and the return load easily on another flight within the hour eg DUB_LHR, or perhaps on a delayed flight which has the capacity.

There are numerous issues in the background that only the operational people know about, so to say that a flight is cancelled for this reason or that, in opposition to what the airlines say is codswallop.

Airlines use generic terms like 'Operational reasons' to cover the multitude of non technical, non weather related issues which can affect a flight.

    For instance imagine this announcement:

"Bantam Airlines regret to announce the cancellation of flight 998 to Dusseldorf because a cargo of paint spilled in the hold and as cleaning would take special equipment and procedures at which time the cabin crew will run out of duty time and to bring in another crew would not help at the latest arrival time in Dusseldorf is 2300 due to noise abatement procedures. Also the only other aircraft available is a smaller capacity so it would create the overbooking of 29 passengers on the outbound leg and 41 on the return leg."

Operational reasons fills the bill much better:cool:
