    Hi,

just bought this a couple of days ago after being assured by the salesperson that it would work with the Irish DTV. Set it up, Ireland isn't an option in the DTV set up but there's an 'Other' option for country and I've tried using that. Scans, finds all the channels and the guide no problem, sound comes through crystal clear but no picture.

I've tried the set up with multiple different countries that apparently use the same MPEG4 system we do but with no joy. Here's a photo of what the side of the box says, can anyone let me know for definite whether this model works with the Irish system and if not am I allowed return it seeing as all i have is a salesman's 'word' that it would work.

    Thanks.

Update: Have looked through the list of working TVs in the thread at the top of this board, a helpful post says of my TV and one other model, and I quote- "Neither of these will not work" !!
Not really sure what that means.

If you are getting sound and no picture, then bring it back - it doesnt and wont work with Saorview

Every DID Electrical store has these, they are also shifting a €399 Panasonic Plasma with no further information on their website....that also means Incompatible ...it is probably the 720p model TX-P42C2L which will not show the 1080i RTÉ2 pictur properly without downscaling. I can see Panasonic Ireland frantically dumping these so I can :(

Bring it back, find the manager and tell them to refund you price of the incompatible telly and the petrol you spent bringing it back. You would not have wasted your time and money had the salesman not misled you about it.

Hannspree ST series - No MPEG-4 therefore not compatible.

chabsey. This Tv you bought is not suitable for Irish DTT. As everyone else have said to you bring it back and inform the Manager that they should not be selling this sort of TV to people in Ireland and make sure to point out to Him the the Salesperson hasn't a clue about Saorview and what TV's are suitable.

I have warned people that while Retailers such as DID may list ONLY compatible tellys on their websites ...such as Hannspree SJ series TVs in the case of DID......things may be very different if you go to the shop itself where they dumped an ST series on you even though you asked the correct questions.

People should be VERY careful about buying Combi units in the retail channel, I believe there are LOTS of incompatible DVD/TV units clogging their shelves.

Billing these retailers for your time and petrol wasted ...along with the full refund...is the only way to focus their minds. They are of course welcome to firesale these incompatible units as "end of line" and "sold as is" before the end of this week and with no further comeback.

It is time to stop dumping crap on the Irish consumer :(

Thanks for info, highly annoying as this was a gift. Took it out of the box, set it all up then spent hours trying to tune it to no avail.

Hope they will take it back as it's only my word against the salesperson.

Think that was the thread I did read (after buying it!). Said that 'neither of these two TVs won't work' which i found confusing.

Weird that they even selling the ST's, they have been doing the 22" SJ, which is MPEG-4 compatible for some time now. Bought one a 2/3 months back.

Not defending the salesman - but he may have got the Hanspree MPEG2 ST and MPEG4 SJ models confused. Then again maybe they hadn't a clue what the Irish DTT specifications require.

Pain in the neck for the OP, but I'm sure there will be no problem getting the TV exchanged for a SJ model or a refund if there are no suitable replacements.

OP just explain to the manager you asked for a Saorview compatible set (a TV with a MPEG4 HD tuner) only to discover if was actually an incompatible Mpeg2 TV which will not work with Saorview.

Just discovered my MIL has been stung the same way. August - she went shopping for a 22-26" tv - and I had armed her with the 'MPEG4' questions. The 25" Hannspree was discussed with the salesman as MPEG4... When she returned to buy it a couple of days later... can't say if MPEG4 was discussed then... but guess what - today when I see the set in person for the first time - and try to tune in the DTT - I discover it is an ST model... I see on the website the SJ model - no sign of the ST model...

Full model number is ST251MABEEH3Y - the official specs don't seem to mention MPEG2 or MPEG4 for this or the SJ range - any one have a link to anything official that does?

Now the problem is... 4 months old, paid cash, box thrown out and receipt still awol....

e.g. SJ model from the website (32") - see under specifications "SDTV and HDTV (MPEG-4 AVC H.264), DVB-T with Common Interface. PAL / SECAM"

    ST251MAB

Tip for future buyers of ANY Saorview TV - ask to see RTE News Now channel. The only place this can come from is Saorview (I think). And once there, then ask to see RTE2 (which is HD) and then look for the MHEG5 Teletext on the RTE2 channel.

Personally, I cannot go buying things like this without digging into specs, reading reviews and even downloading the Manual to see how certain features work.

Thanks - I see it now for the SJ range - missed it when looking late last night.

All fine in theory - but if model discussed is the MPEG4 version... and then they give you an STxxx in the box (to keep the post clean I'll suggest this would only be by accident) and you are 67 yrs old and you don't connect it to an aerial for DTT for 4 months then quite frankly the shop hold all 5 aces (especially if the receipt is lost, box gone and the latest is the stand was still in the box - put stright on the wall by the local handyman).

The moral of the story is I should have insisted she buy the Sony From Powercity for more money and have it delivered from Dublin... rather than trust the DID salespeople who had insisted the Hannspree was a quality tv and MPG4.

I find that loudly eating the head off the salesmen in the shop on a saturday when they are busy is a good way to 'expedite' refund and replacement as one wishes. :)

Agreed Sponge Bob, I got a Hi-Fi on Stephens Day a couple of years ago after it being obvious that some of the first 10 people who had options in them never bought one so I was loud and got the Hi-Fi.

In any case Martin F, you might just be in luck. My memory of anything I ever bought from DID was that they recorded the Surname against all purchases, irrespective of how the item was paid for. In addition, they may well have logged the serial no. of all of their models so they can't have soneone else's sale pinned on them in the event of a warranty claim.

While I'm not a PowerCity lover, one thing to remember with them is to buy stuff with a Laser or Credit Card. You then don't need a receipt because they check your purchases against the card numbers. Again, I think they also take surnames.

Of course... don't they have to record all tv purchases for the tv license.... Name & Address etc.. I hadn't thought of that until just now. So they would have a record of the purchase.

Could This be Stickied into the top of the TVs working With Saorview - The List or somewhere else prominent as it is easily the single best piece of advice for any member of the general public buying a new television and will also demonstrate which retailers and shop assistants have any clue what they are talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,372 ✭✭✭championc

Yep Mickey, I'll ask a Mod the next time I'm requesting "The List" to be updated. I also think that if you are going to buy something for a couple of hundred quid, you should at least be able to get a demonstration of it.

I certainly remember PowerCity having a set, which they were proudly selling as Saorview compatible, showing I think the News channel. This was many months back.

I think that the one difficult area for Saorview (understanding wise) will be Dublin or other areas which are predominantly served by Cable. 90% of Cable users will Never have any use for Saorview but as can be seen from other posts, some think the channels will be on there or may think the TV's will stop working on their cable. And then, on the retaillers side, they'll sell the TV's which they'll mainly promote with SkySports and the likes playing on the screens in-store.

DID tend to record sales on the Computer, so might not be a problem, have you actually gone back to them...

Actually more like 50% to 60% by studying statistics.

The retailers want people to beleive it's 90% to 100% to justify selling obsolete dumped stock.

Yes - this is 100% correct - another poster already said this.

I complained strongly via email to the store - and the Manager has been very 'customer focused' - fair play to him - credit where it is due. He has located the store records of the transaction, and has offered to exchange the unit for an MPEG4 version.

The missing stand turned up - in a 'safe' place in the garage.

So - hopefully tomorrow the inlaws will get what they originally wanted when they actually go back to the store.

Update: Returned to the shop with the TV, swap made without any hassle at all. New TV set up and showing Saorview perfectly now (think it's the SJ model, or whichever of them is the working one!). Thanks for all the replies people.
