Official Android 2.1 or 2.2 Upgrade For LG Optimus GT540?

    Hi.

    After googling fruitlessly for the last hour or so, I just thought I come straight to boards - hasn't let me down yet.

    The screen on my wife's GT540 broke a couple of weeks ago. Her boss heard about it and gave her an Xperia X8 as a crimbo bonus.

    We've left the GT540 in to get the screen replaced, so I can finally replace my 4 year-old Sony K610i. Great phone, but so dated now, specially when I see everyone around me with smartphones.

    This GT540 currently runs Android 1.6, but it appears 2.1 is better, and available for it?

    I take it 2.2 is the latest update, and is even better than 2.1?

    Is 2.2 available for the GT540?

    I assume upgrading to either 2.1 or 2.2 is both free & easy?

    Assuming there'll frequently be updates of Android in the future , will they always be available for any Android phone?

    Where do I go to get this upgrade?

    I'm not into getting a new phone on a whim every year (hence had a K610i for 4 years...), so I'd like to know if it'd be possible to use this GT540 for a few years, keeping it up-to-date with updates/upgrades?
