Water outage in XXXX -- Read here for Water outages

    Hi all,

I am just wondering if anyone is aware of a scheduled (or unscheduled) water outage in the Congress place / Rathfadden area of Waterford?

Have had no water for 2 days solid now...suspected frozen pipes but have worked the mains / attic / stopcock etc to no effect.

A relative then informed me that the water in my area was actually switched off? Does anyone know if this is accurate? Or could it be a freeze somewhere underground?

    Thanks

    Netz

Its possible its frozen away from your house - but there is a thaw in place (its 5C in Tramore at least) so it should improve. I'm not aware of any outages. We have frozen pipes here at home in places, another estate nearby had a problem similar to you and it was due to frozen on the roads, and same in places in town.

Water tankers are being provided at Tesco Shopping Centre, Arkeen & The Glen, in front of the Forum Car Park (both adjacent to the bottle banks) over the Christmas period.

Assistance with the collection of water will be provided by Waterford City Council personnel at these locations on: 23rd December from 3pm to 5pm, 24th December from 11am to 3pm and 26th December from 11am to 3pm.

In the event of an emergency householders can contact WCC on 051-875555.

Yep hang in there! It'll take a little while for the cold in the ground to be beaten but water should be flowing again by Tuesday I'd say.

There have been houses with no water near me for about a week now. Ours went off yesterday. Hoping it will be back on by this evening.

We had a burst mains pipe in our house on Christmas morning :(. Managed to get someone out before it created too much of a mess!

Christ, they say you should turn water off at the mains if leaving the house empty for a spell, this winter its almost like we should kill the water source regardless!

Im pretty sure it's not frozen pipes considering we have had water all week and only gone this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

Well ours is fine and running without any hassle. We helped our neighbours get theirs sorted and they haven't come back in to let us know their pipes froze again.

Ill put the two topics on water outage together as today is the time most people will have problems with their water, with the thaw.

Do you have water in the cold tap in the kitchen sink? If not you're not getting anything from the mains. I presume you know all this.
It does seem unlikely that it would freeze now alright but don't see what else it could be. Do your neighbours have water? That would probably rule out the mains pipe being burst around the house.

Sounds like your mains stockcock out on the footpath is frozen, if you can open the cover pour some hot water down it and this should help speed things up if that is where the problem is. Otherwise you have to wait until nature takes its course.

Yep sounds like it did indeed freeze just outside the house. Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do. Like Danjo said you can apply hot water to it, usually by wrapping it with a rag or towel and pouring hot water down but this doesn't always work. It shouldn't take long to unfreeze anyway. Does seem strange that it happened to you when the temperatures rose but maybe you just got unlucky.

Hopefully it sorts itself out soon. In the meantime try to get some decent-volume containers to fill up from your neighbours or whatever and make sure the tank in the attic doesn't run dry as this happened to us a few weeks ago, causing an airlock in the cold feed from the attic which was a nightmare.

    Good luck with it.

Bad luck, are the pipes properly wrapped? They should have foam insulation.

Services in the county are being effected with phased shut offs today anyway, for leak detection. The council also made this appeal:-

Waterford County Council is appealing to water consumers to conserve water in order to minimise disruption to supplies. The Council is also asking consumers and key holders of holiday homes and commercial properties to check individual properties for leaks and to effect repairs as quickly as possible.

Hi.... I've no running water since last Wednesday night! I thought with the thaw that it would be back at least by today - can anyone give me any ideas as to what or where i can get help? Also, obviously my main water tank in the attic is empty but the 2nd smaller tank (for the central heating) has only about 6 or 7 inches in it - is it ok to have the central heating on?

    Thanks......:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 403 ✭✭Mysterious&Shy

Would it be possible to draw water from somewhere to fill your tank?

With it being that low, you would only want the heating on for an hour..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 cailineire01

Thanks for replying...... I'd have no idea how the take water from somewhere else...... oh really, i'd best turn off the heating so! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,435 ✭✭✭solerina

my water never froze but not that the thaw has come we havnt had much water, i think my local authority are really bringing down the pressure to save water....my tank is also empty and the only tap working is the mains tap in the kitchen and its really slow and weak.............maybe its the same with you ???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 cailineire01

hi solerina..... i dont know about the local authority doing anything about the pressure but i dont have any water at all not even a drip since last wed night so im presuming it was frozen pipes...

Ant the worst thing is, my housing estate has not been turned over to the local council yet, so I cannot contact them to do anything and with being xmas hols, the company who built the house is obivously still on hols!!!

Merged with the main topic on water problems. The council have yet to say if there is any water being turned off in the city, but it is in the county. So one would assume its a local problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭savic04

my neighbour water never went so I ran a garden hose from his outside tap and connected to my outside tap, turned both on, so I have water

Im not sure how long I should leave them on for though?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

eh? where are you running the pipe to? How does running from a tap to a tap work?

All taps do is release the presure, they aren't 1-way.

Normally of course you wouldn't force water up a tap, but it can be done. Some smart thinking Savic :)

I expect you have to be careful not to cause an overflow in your attic, if your neighbour's water tank is higher than yours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 266 ✭✭THall04

I followed all the advice about keeping the house warm and opening the attic trap door.....but my water still got cut off.

Figured out that if everything was OK inside the house , it must be a frozen stopcock outside the house ( in the footpath at the end of my driveway).

I opened the lid to the stopcock and poured a kettle of boiling water on it.....fixed the problem about a minute later

to be honest it wasnt me who came up with it, last year during teh snow I was away in England and wife rang the builders who built the house, they sent out someone and they came up with this...

So i used it this year. Next door neighbour house is a little higher up alright, I turn outside tap off when Im not using the water or when I am going off for a while

Aw some nightmare. Happened to us a few weeks back. Just as I was about to attempt to resolve it by forcing water up the tap in the downstairs bathroom from the outside tap it started to clear itself, coughing andspluttering for a little while. Hopefully you'll be as lucky.

It's a nightmare because it means the cisterns aren't refilling even though you've finally got your water back. No showers either if you're got pumped electric ones like most of us!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 947 ✭✭✭LanceStorm

water in grange manor has been back the last day or so, but the electric shower upstairs is the only thing not back working, it just sounds like a hair-dryer when you switch it on, any ideas what to do with it?

Have a look in the Plumbing forum (yes we have one!) I think there are a few queries about them.

I'd guess that someone tried to run it while the water was off and it caused an airlock. If you haven't asked in the plumbing forum yet or gotten it sorted, do so. It's easy to resolve but would depend on what type of shower you have etc.
