Rather than take another thread off topic regarding the OP's fine list of engines for engine of the year how about we create the boards engine of the decade.

I would like the top five diesel and petrol engines and then we shall create a poll.

You can give a reason or just nominate an engine. I'll leave the thread open for 3 days then I'll select the top five engines in each category by adding up the number of times they are mentioned positively.

Copy and paste this list so we can easily keep track and don't forget to add to it.

    Petrol:

    Fiat Twinair

    Diesel

    VAG 5.0 TDI

The Radical SR8's home made v8 2.6 Take 2 Hayabusa engines, stick them into a common crank case, and get 363 bhp before any forced induction. Did the ring in a little over 6 minutes. Awesome.

Road tax is presumably a little heavy on them? ;)

    2001-2010:confused:

First decade of the new millennium although you can argue if it was 2000 when it began

Assuming you mean the last 10years, Im going to say the Audi 2.7 BiTurbo engine (petrol of course).

Not only did it power legendary models like the Audi S4 and RS4 (B5 models) but its bizarrely strong construction (rumoured to be designed as a diesel block originally) and forged components allowed a 265bhp (in the S4) engine to be boosted to near 500bhp on largely stock internals.

Low end torque, flexible, half way decent economy, not even in the max tax bracket and most importantly an insanely good community rep and support. This engine is so well regarded in both the US and Europe a tuner brought out a competitor to the later gen RS4 (which diverged from Audi's boosted induction roots with a V8) featuring this 2.7 engine ported to the new chassis. Which was faster than Audi's own effort.

Its the engine that allows a tuned RS4 B5 estate to disgrace an Audi R8 supercar on track, its one of the best German engines in the last 10years, not because of some uber technology it introduced, but because of its brute force and overall effectiveness.

I can't remember what the argument is but I remember at the time of the Sydney Olympics people said it wasn't the first of the new millennium even though it was in 2000

Either way, back on topic as every gets the idea of when i'm taking about

It is hard to pick a good Diesel engine. I would say the flat 4 Subaru. It is well engineered and efficient.

My second guess would be the latest Mercedes twin turbo 2.2 CDI for its really high power output (204-224 bhp), massive torque and very low fuel consumption and that's all from 4-cylinder (low tax band) unit.

The relative economy of that boxer diesel isn't hectic. 150bhp is starting to lag back a bit too.
