    Hi all,

Just a quick one, im wondering does the A380 go direct non-stop from LHR to Australia and visa versa? If not then why not?

    No, they go via Singapore.

Great circle route direct from LHR to Perth gives a flight time of 19.5 hours.

It can't take enough fuel to do the whole trip. It is hoped the B787 will go LHR Austrailia non stop.

I never thought you'd be the one asking the questions, Streyr. :D
Its already been answered I see, but hell it would be much too long of a flight for people to endure if it was direct. no? What would be the flight time I wonder. I think a little stop over would be necessary, for the physical and mental health of the passengers and crew and perhaps the aircraft itself? :P.

It has been put forward that the LHR-SYD would not be popular with pax. People can cope with up to 15 hours, it is estimated that 19-20 would be unbearable.

Perhaps the 30% moisture levels of the B787 will make long journeys more bearable.

Economically however I think 2 flights consume less fuel. Finnair adverttise that flying USA-Helsinki-Asia is 'greener' than USA-Asia. You burn a lot of fuel carrying the fuel needed for the second half of the single sector.

We used to have flights double manned due to the lenghty sectors involved afaik some sectors were over 17hrs long,The company fitted in extra bunks for the crew.

On 17 August 1989 the first Qantas 747-400, VH-OJA 'City of Canberra', touched down at Sydney Airport after a non-stop flight from London to Sydney. The 18,001km flight, under the command of Captain David Massy-Greene, took 20 hours, nine minutes and five seconds and established a new world distance record for a commercial aircraft. When Qantas had helped establish the Kangaroo Route in 1935 it had taken five different aircraft types, three airlines, 42 refuelling calls, two railways and up to 14 days to bridge the same gap.

Singapore Airlines do Newark(EWR) to Singapore(SIN) non-stop with a flight time of 18hr 45min in an all buisness config. in a A340-500
