Restringing Violin

    Hi all,

Have a violin at home here, had it for years and 1 of the strings (G) is gone. Would I be better getting the lot replaced or just getting a new string? Also, how easy is it to restring yourself or would I be better off getting someone else to do it in the shop? How much would it be roughly?

Many thanks! Sorry for all the questions!

Restring the whole lot, a budget set of strings will be around €30 Euro. Do the strings one at a time, very easy to do, but if you make the mistake of replacing all at the same time, you will inevitably end up moving the bridge position from above the sound post inside the body which will alter the tone of the instrument.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!

So new set of strings then. Are there any cheap ones that you'd recommend? Just realised how ridiculous that sounds!

Honestly, no clue. It's been ages and ages since I bought a set, but pop into any music shop and they should be able to sort you out.

D'addario Prelude are under 20 euro, good popular student set. Helicore a little over 30 euro.
