honestly it's not that bad, such a gorgeous day. The only thing was my feet were cold from walking in the snow before and after. If you're in Dublin the changing shelters at bull island are a great spot, tide was right in too.

its sub zero and the irish sea is most radioactively contaminated sea in the world, no thanks

Did it for a charity thing this morning, but not in Dublin.

The initial shock when you get in is hell, but it goes fast enough. Its the numb feet from the snow that really is the worst part!:)

I assume when you say it wasn't that bad that you were expecting to die. Ahh only frostbite! Everything went better than expected.

It's a great feeling when the blood rushes back into your testicles about mid March.

RTE Weather last nite told everybody NOT to go swimming.. They said that the water would be -7 and anybody who goes for a dip would be in severe risk of hypothermia.

Hard to imagine the sea water being -7 though, the air temp probably, but would not fancy gettin in.

Its absolute lunacy. You really can die instantly doing this.

Urban myth I believe. You can't die instantly - like your heart stopping on impact with the cold water.

What can happen tho - people who are not used to water in general may take a big gasp out of shock on impact with the water, fill their lungs with water and lose consciousness. Unlikely but possibly.

Hypothermia is a possibility tho if you stay in too long.

Irish coastal waters never reach anything like -7 degrees.

I swim daily in Salthill, Galway and I also take a water temperature reading there daily.
Christmas eve and Christmas Day have been the coldest readings so far this year at 2.5 degrees Celsius.

Yea the sea water would freeze at about -2

You can die instantly from being submerged in sub zero water. Cardiac arrest can be brought on by extreme tempreture changes. Its called cold shock response - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_shock_response

Incorrect. Still, clear , unsalinated water freezes @ 0c, ocean water is salty, in large volumes and constantly moving meaning it has to be A LOT colder than just 0 to freeze it.

You're wrong. The coldest seawater ever recorded in a liquid state was at -2.6 Degrees Centrigrade. Most seawater (35Kg/L salinity) freezes at -2 Degrees Centigrade.

All of which is completly irrelevant cause the seas does not drop its temperature anywhere near freezing:
