Need to see a GP over xmas

    Hi,

I've got an embarrassing problem here people and I'm starting to freak out a bit now. Basically I've had an inverted hair on the base of my penis for a few weeks now and it's starting to look like it's infected. It hasn't been a big deal at all until this morning(talk about bad timing) when I had a look down there and it's after getting bigger and definitely looks slightly infected.

If there was a GP open I'd go down and get them to have a look but since it's xmas there is nobody open. What should I do? I'd say it will be alright until the day after Stephens day where I can get to my doc but at the same time I don't want to take any risks with this particular part of the body.

Also as I've never had to see a doc about this sort of thing before I'm not sure of the procedure involved. Do I have to get sent to a gyno or can my doc have a look first? I've seen a plaque on my docs wall stating he is actually a qualified gyno but I'm not sure if he will deal with this sort of issue since he's my GP, first and foremost

Note to mods: I'm not actually looking for specific medical advice here, I'm just trying to find out how to approach this situation. Please don't delete this, I'm having a bit of freak out here and could do with some advice from someone in the know

Get yourself to a GP when you can.

do you have any tea tree oil in the house?

if you have put a few drops in some warm water and bathe it, it will take away some of the swelling and pain until you can get to a doctor

Where are you living, OP? I don't know if it is serious enough for it, but one possibility is to get in contact with the out of hours doctors - like Westdoc. Like I said, I really don't know if your ailment is serious enough to warrant visiting them, but that option is there.

Call you doctors surgery and they should have a message telling you how to contact the nearest available out-of-hours doctor.

In the mean time you can try puting a warm flannel on the offending area to soften the hair and then use a loofah or tweezers to retrieve if you can see it - if not, do yourself a favour and get onto the out-of-hours service pronto so you don't spend christmas in pain. In-growing hairs are very common, nothing to be embarrassed about.

    All the best.

    Hiya,

I would deff call your local out of hours gp service, i've copied the nums below from the hse website.

I would deff get it looked inot, don't know if it would be similar or not in terms of how dangerous it is, but someone in my family had ingrown hair on his back and went to the doctor and had to go to hosp and get it treated immediately, apparently an ingrown hair on the back is dangerous, don't know about anywhere else on the body tho.. hope you get it sorted, maybe let us know ur ok:) happy christmas :)
