Can i ask a question ,do you have to have a certain type of a roof for big icicles or could a certain type of spouting prevent them?
Theres none really hanging from my roof ,only the odd small one, I remember in my grandas house 10 years ago there was huge icicles hanging down from an old type roof,
I guess if theres no thaw then icicles wont really form because theres no drip either?

The icicles here are by far biggest where we have problems with the gutters. So therefore I guess it's the amount of flow that counts. 5 - 6 foot icicles where the gutters usually torrent in heavy rain, but only about 6 inch - 3 foot icicles elsewhere.

Temps bouncing around 0 cause them. A rapid thaw will bring down alot of gutters I reckon, imagine a massive icicle in your downpipe, water & ice will drag the lot down!
