I'm hopping to pick up one sometime in the next 6-9 months.
Just hope to find a jem within my price range [about 6-8K] is this realistic ?
I'm thinking that the high tax will make them hard cars to sell so a lower price ? high mileage doesn't bother me if its been looked after.

Is there anything i should look out for with them ?
Have heard the oil should be changed regularly on them and that a timing belt service is very expensive ?
Turbo is a week point on high mileage ones

I think there is only 4 trims ?
    Standard
    SE
    S
    Sport

I'll be looking for an auto/tiptronic and ideally a Quattro if one pops up.

I have a 2000 model A6 Avant Quattro Sport. I bought mine around March 2009 in London. It is a 6 speed manual, with leather seats, climate control, cruise control etc etc, very nice spec I think! Due to being the Quattro Sport variant, it has the 180bhp 2.5TDI engine. It also came with full UK service history. Total price for the car including VRT, flight over and ferry back etc came to roughly 7,500 euro. That was back in 2009, so your price target seems reasonable to me.

I haven't had too many problems with it. My mechanic rotates the tyres at each service so the tyre wear was quite OK. The alternator did go once, that cost 700 euro to have replaced with a new one. But that was the only thing that's gone majorly wrong. I took it on a family trip to Paris after I bought it and it was great for a long journey, very economical as well. Not sure if you're looking for the Avant model, but it's extremely roomy and good looking for an estate car. The Quattro Sport model also handles very well, fantastic in the recent weather, I'm often looking out through the windscreen at other cars having trouble dealing with slight inclines, snowy slushy roads and I'm reminded just how fantastic 4WD is :)

Service interval on mine is every 9,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. I don't think while doing research for my car did I find anything in particular to look out for. Except maybe from personal experience (I used to own a 1998 A6 2.5TDI) I would say make sure you get one with a full service history.

SURely you would get a 99 or 00 model in good condition for a lot less than 6000.
