Hi, I got the notion to play my guitar through my PC mainly because I'm cheap and most of the "playing" I do is following tabs on it. So I got a lead with a usb converter on it and through a lot of trial and effort managed to find a freeware vst ( hermanseibb) and more trial and effort got it to play rawk guitar sounds. But the latency is such that it isn't really any use for playing along. I found changing the buffer of the input wave device (no, I do not have a clue what I am talking about) reduced the delay but made the sound awful.
Am I completely barking up the wrong tree doing this - I just want to hear the guitar as I play, I'm not too bothered about a nice sound?

Look up LePou, he makes preamp plug ins http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/

You can get the preamp vsts from there, you will then need an impulse loader vst, there is one on lepou's page called lecab 2.0, I use one called keffir and it works well for me. You need to get some impulses then (which are wave files that model the power amp and micing up), which you will load up into the impulse program. You will find a lot of these on the Andy Sneap forum http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/andy-sneap-151/

To combat lag, you should download the asio4all driver http://www.asio4all.com/ and run this as your sound processing device in whatever DAW you are loading up. This should get rid of the lag for you.

I've been messing around with the amp sims and I'm very impressed with the sounds you can get from them, here's some examples of some of the stuff I have recorded with them.

Or you could buy this online or in a music shop that sells Line 6 stuff:

    http://line6.com/toneportgx/

It comes with software called Gearbox that simulates loads of different amps, cabinets, mics, effects pedals etc

And you can use Audacity to record with it really easily, just have Gearbox open and hit the record button in Audacity.

    Really useful bit of kit.

Hey guys, sorry if this is a little off topic but seeing as the OP was talking about VST's, does anybody know of a freeware VST wrapper programme that's available?

My pc, although adequate, isn't all that capable of facilitating big vst Hosts like Sonar (the one i'm currently using).
