It may mean you have emptied your attic tank, is your cold tap at kitchen sink working ok?

Go up and check the attic tank level. It may be the mains water feed that keeps it topped up has frozen, it happened me yesterday, and a few others on the road. If it is empty post back and we can see whats next.

You have to get into attic and find the water tank and physically look into it to see is the water all gone out of it, it should be full to within 6 inches or a foot of the top of the tank, if its empty it will have 2 or 3 inches of water in it.

One thing worth doing now anyway is open attic door and leave it open until the big thaw comes, some heat from the house will help keep the pipes from freezing, and will thaw out any that are frozen now

Water is right up to ballcock.
Pressed down the ballcock and water came into the tank??

Strange. Bathroom is fine: have hot and cold

    Just kitchen. No hot.

Also! Downstairs loo have hot and cold. BUT (and this is weird!!) : the sink is half full with water not going anywhere. Plug is out. Was like this when I went in

Frozen hot water pipe down to the kitchen so by the look of it, it might go down in the outside wall and has frozen. And drain from downstairs sink has probably frozen also.

    Thank you for your help.

Should I get the hairdryer out?

I have the heating up really high....maybe that'll do it?

Yes the heating up should clear it, leave attic door open even though your attic appears to be ok but that will stop anything freezing up there.

I dont know if you can see much of the pipe from the affected hot tap in kitchen, but if you can then you could try heating it, but with hot water at other taps you should be ok for now until it clears itself.

If its working in the downstairs bathroom hot tap then the hot pipe probably goes from there to the kitchen sink, and this is probably the pipe thats frozen.

Ah brilliant. I have the attic door open and heating up high.

If not working later I have little halogen heater which I can put in downstairs toilet - no radiator in there so very cold.

Fair play robbie7730 you have been very helpful.

    Happy Christmas!

Your downstairs toilet is cold well make sure your USE the toilet, i.e. if you are using another one! I have a bathroom which is rarely if ever used. Have guests who used it last night and the water in the pan is not going anywhere. I noticed that the foul water shore is free but the downpipe from the bathroom taps and sink is frozen sold so it obviously backed up on the loo as they all meet seemingly, at some junction. Now it has affected two upstairs loos. We have a downstairs bathroom with toilet which is working perfectly. I am HOPING it is that and when the thaw sets in it will free up the toilets as well.
